Different tastes

Both my DD & DS have packed lunch for school. One problem I have that’s costing me a fortune is they both like near enough completely different foods. They both eat the same meats. But when it comes to yoghurts, one eats one sort and the other something different, that’s not too bad. It’s the fruit that’s killing me. My DD only eats grapes, satsumas and blueberries and my DS only eats watermelon, pineapple, mango & apples. He does eat Bananas too but due to a child being allergic in the school they have banned them. It’s costing so much too buy the fresh fruit, I don’t want to stop buying it for obvious reasons and they both love th fruit they eat. I’ve introduced both to the same fruits growing up it’s just they both have very different tastes. Anyone else have a similar problem?

When you buy watermelon/pineapple for your son are you buying pre-prepared or...? As if you buy the whole fruit and chop it yourself at home then it's far cheaper ....
Also, as those (and mango) are tropical fruit (and therefore have to be imported) I would suggest you keep those as a treat rather than being a regular occurrence ...
For DD could you get her to eat frozen (and defrosted) blueberries? They are cheaper but still delicious
For things like apples I always buy the "value" bags - they might have some odd sizes and not always be the same variety but they still taste good

Could you maybe use it as a teaching exercise? E.g. learning which fruit are in season and when and getting them to try new ones that are in season? E.g. plums, pears, kiwis, rhubarb etc...

Where are you getting your fruit from?
Aldi & Lidl often have an excellent range of fruit including tropical fruits which is vastly cheaper than other supermarkets.
If you are in a decent sized town or city, oriental supermarkets are also worth a shout.

I get the fruit from whichever supermarket I can get too. I don’t have a car so it’s whichever I’m near at a time. I do buy the watermelon and pineapple big ones as they are usually a pound and last a whole week. It’s just the fact they both like completely different things 🙈

Fruit is really expensive, well tropical things are as they have to be flown in. Could you cut it down a bit by swapping the fruit for veg sticks some days?

He eats ally of veg he just likes it cooked. He is on the autism spectrum so he’s very particular about certain things. He does try new stuff which I’m thankful for but if he doesn’t like the texture he won’t eat it. I do do jelly with fruit just to mix it up a bit.
