What type of potatoes would you serve with this meal?

I've got friends coming for lunch tomorrow and I'm doing a beef and mushroom pie and a cheese, leek and potato pie. I'm currently thinking of doing mash and/or garlic roast new potatoes with broccoli/ cauli and peas. What potatoes would you serve with it? Worried that there is no sauce with the cheese pie so it might be a bit dry or too potatoey!

At a pie and mash cafe recently I had a tower of food, mash, pie, mushy peas, gravy then crispy onion bits. It was lovely.

I really would not cater specifically for your five year old, nor tailor your meal to meet her needs. That way lies madness. It's how kids end up fussy and you end up cooking different meals.

Make your meal for what is the best for the majority and she should not be given special attention, she should just eat what she wants from thr offerings and nothing be said if she's says no mash. Don't make a fuss. Just move past it,

Clearly I lost it a long time ago OP.... Grin

Yes, onion sauce is like any other really. But I fry the onions very gently first for at least 10 mins. Then add flour and stir for a couple of mins, then add the milk slowly, stirring all the time. You can add cream and nutmeg if you like, for extra richness. If you do it with stock instead of milk it's a gravy really.

That sounds amazing Theimpossiblegirl! Defo have to try onion sauce. Sounds delish. And I was being a bit flippant about tailoring the whole meal to the the 5 year old Bluntness. She's not a fussy eater at all really. No more than the average 5 year old anyway!

Definitely mash.

There was cheese too, how could I forget?
I love this thread. :)

How is the leek cheese and potato pie made? No sauce so is it like mash with leeks and cheese mixed in, in pastry? I think another potato would be too much potato personally. Especially not a mash. If it must have potato maybe roast or crispy cubed potatoes or something for some textural difference.

Seems like the meal is being planned for the meat pie with less thought of what goes with the veg pie?

What about roast sweet potato or something?

StripySocksAndDocs · 06/01/2018 22:52

I'd say mask. Where there's gravy I say mash.

Mind you I don't like pie - so don't eat the pastry. But pie and mash is a thing isn't it so pastry and mash is obviously ok.

My favourite potato is hasselback potatoes, really easy, look good and nice to eat as already sliced!

Simply roughly slice whole baby potatoes (Charlotte work well) between a couple of wooden spoon handles so you dont cut all the way through, coat lightly with oil and sprinkle with sea salt and roast. Yum!

There are lots of recipes for adding spices etc, but I prefer plain.

I've never done hasselbacks but they look yummy! The cheesy pie is just slow cooked leeks, thyme, bit of potato and lots of cheese in shortcrust pastry. So yes there is a risk of too much potato, but as I'm doing lots of veg I don't think it will be the end of the world.

See now I had thought I'd decided on buttery new potatoes but the hasselbacks are calling me.

Mash. Always mash. Or no potato and a pile of brocolli and other green stuff.
