Under fondant icing?

If you're fondant icing a cake do you put something under it? I had a look on YouTube and the baker put marzipan under the fondant icing on a sponge cake. I'm making a birthday cake for DD and I'm not sure if she/her friends will like marzipan. Could I put two layers of fondant for a nice smooth finish?? Or just stick with a little bit of buttercream?

I think usually you would either put a layer of marzipan or a thin layer of buttercream (a crumb coat) underneath. This helps even out any lumps or bumps so that the fondant on the outside is nice and smooth.

Use buttercream and get the cake as smooth as you can then when the fondant goes on that too will be lovely and smooth. Have a watch of this....

I use buttercream but you can also use chocolate spread or jam. You just need something a bit sticky.
