12mo - what and when does your DC eat?

Having yet another dilemma about how much my DS is eating and need to see if / where i'm going wrong...

At the moment my DS has the following

7am - 9oz milk

8.30-9.00 - breakfast (usually cereal + fresh fruit)

12 - warm meal, eg cottage pie, spag bol, cous cous w/roast veg, followed by fresh fruit

3.30 - sandwiches or spagetti on toast followed by a yoghurt or fruit pot

5-5.30 - perhaps fish fingers & peas, or some of what we have for tea (usually both!)

7 - 9oz milk

Is this a lot? I'm a bit confused...again!

More than what my DD who is almost 2 eats but we worry sometimes that she is not eating enough. If his weight is okay, I wouldn't worry.

I bet lots of mums would wish for their DCs to eat like this - sounds like he isn't a fussy eater unlike most

Nip · 23/04/2007 13:16

laudaud - he doesnt stop eating - he woke late from his nap the other day so was v.hungry and he ate an adults size portion of cottage pie - i dont know if this is good for him though. With all the talk of obesity etc i want to do the best for him.

mines a little older and has slightly less - slightly less milk (about 5fl in morning and 7 in evening) and 3pm is only a small snack like fruit and rice cake, also has a mid morning snack of the same as his breakfast is at 8am.

But my DS is smallish (25% on weight charts).

Why are you worried?

suejonez · 23/04/2007 13:19

is he overly chubby?

munz · 23/04/2007 13:24

my son's 14 months na dhe has

7-8 breakfast 9oz bottle - normally cereals
10-11 snack (dried fruit and water)
12.30-1 dinner sandwich, salad finger foods fresh fruit
3 snack and 9oz milk noprmally bread stick or rice cake
5 dinner - normally waht ever we're having I try for 2 veg pots and meat

6.45 9oz milk.

water if he wakes up at night. j's on the 75th centile, always has been since birth. I figure he's happy not over weight at all, I try for a balanced diet. I guess the portion sizes could be an issue?

it's proba growth spurt (J doens't always eat what I offer and some days will only have a yoghurt/banana so I like to feed him up a bit when he's feeling ok iycwim)

Nip · 23/04/2007 13:29

he's not chubby but has a large tummy (but dont they all at this age?), he has been on the 91st centile since day one but i have no idea what this means.

I dont really know what kids eat - everyone keeps saying he has what you have, but i've eaten badly all my life. I make all his food specifically for him, so that i know he'll always have a good meal...

I have no one i can ask - hence why im so totally lost.

91% just means that of 100 kids his age he will be on average heaver than 91% of them. Doesn;t take into account height so for example he could be taller or just stockier. If he's been consistently at 91% I wouldn;t tihnk you have anything to worry about. IIRC they only start worrying if they are above 98% and even then would take into account height and build.

Maybe if your diet is so rubbish you should be eating what he's eating not the other way around!

suejonez · 23/04/2007 13:36

oh and I agree btw - I wouldn;t dream of feeding my DS some of the rubbish I eat! Though we do share things like scambled eggs and baked beans at the weekend.

Nip · 23/04/2007 13:37

Dont worry about me, i'm working on improving my diet (and to be honest it's all thanks to DS as i cook him som fab stuff now!)
Its just a concern how much..

I'll keep doing what i'm doing and see what happens.

it sounds like your doing a fab job!maybe his mid afternoon snack could be a bannana or some rice cakes instead of spagetti on toast? just an idea...

MuffinMclay · 23/04/2007 14:17

Sounds like loads. I wish my DS would eat that much! If your DS eats it then he must be hungry, so you must be doing the right thing.

Mine (12 months) has this:

7am - offered 5oz milk, drinks some of it (2/3 at most). Cereal with fruit. Little bit if toast somedays.

midmorning - offered a snack (cereal bar, rice cakes). Usually declines unless he has refused his breakfast earlier and is hungry.

12 lunch - fish/meat+veg+carbohydrate of some sort in a 'main' meal. Yoghurt

3pm - snack. Rice cake, banana - most of it is fed to the dog

5.30 something like beans, cheese, scambled egg on toast. Rice pudding and fruit.

6.30 8oz milk. Bed.

suejonez · 23/04/2007 19:32

muffin don;t know if this is helpful but my DS will drink more milk in the morning if he drinks it from a cup with a straw. Its a pain as you have to sit there and hold it but he will get through 6oz sometimes with a straw and only 3oz if botle or sippy cup. But my DS is a little older so yours may not be able to deal with a straw yet.

LucyJones · 23/04/2007 19:37

I think it's great that he eats so much. However I do find it a bit strange that he has two teas with only an hour and a half btw them! But if he's hungry I gues he must need it. He definitely eats more than my 3 year old ds.

MuffinMclay · 23/04/2007 20:11

suejonez - I'll try that. I'm aware that DS is having far less milk than the recommended amount for his age. I've just been trying to make up the difference with sauces, custard etc.

suejonez · 23/04/2007 20:17

I do something similar - as DS isn;t too keen on milk he has 5oz morning and 7 oz at night - in between its yohurt, custard and rice pudding. Think he ends up OK.

LittleMan · 24/04/2007 21:13

Hi
Ds is 11 months and has been a bit up and down with food (illnesses etc) but has over the last month settled nicely! Here's how he goes

~7am 9oz FF
8.15/30am Breakfast usually 1 whole weetabix with 3/4oz whole milk + 1 small yoghurt + water
~11am Snacks (breadsticks, ricecakes etc) + water
12.15/30pm Lunch of a hot meal (cottage pie, fish pie, chicken cass, cheesy pasta etc) and pudding (fruit and rice pudding/custard/yoghurt) + water.
3pm snacks - mini sandwiches, crackers and cream cheese, fruit pieces (if so inclined) crumpets, scotch pancakes etc + water.
5.15/30pm Dinner, again a hot meal and pudding but usually slightly smaller than lunch.
7pm 5ish oz FF.

He seems to be hungry quite a lot these days, but I put it down to both growth and activity, he is always on the go, learning to crawl, to pull himself up the stairs, walking with you at every opportunity. He has always been just above 9th percentile, but dropped below when ill, guess now he might be making up for it a bit!! We were shopping in Sainsbury today and most of the way round was happily chewing on something, I think the checkout lady thought we never feed him at home!!
