have somehow fallen into trap of giving ds3 this stuff which i know full weel is a marketing gimmick, is not actually neccessary and is overpriced nonsense.

but i tried switching him from aptamil forward (the stuff to 12mths) to cows milk and he just retched alot. or threw it up. so i got this crap once to see if hed take it coz it tastes similar and he does. now im tied to buying this crap and theres never enough on the shelves coz hardly any daft bugger buys it so theres little demand!

ds1 and 2 both just switched to copws milk at 1yo. (ds1 wont touch it any more but thats anpother story)

he will take v v watered down juice instead, but can i just cut all milk out of his diet (hes 15m) and try to get him to eat more cheese??

feel such a doofis asking this...

Does he have yoghurt or milk on cereal or porridge or eat foods containing dairy? I wouldn't cut milk out of his diet completely, unless he has a diagnosed allergy, it's the best, most easily availabe to your body source of calcium for growing children (you'd have to eat a shed-load of spinach to get the same amount of calcium as you'd have from a glass of milk).

NappiesGalore · 22/04/2007 18:50

i dunno how much of those things he actually gets down him tbh, since he feeds himself yogurts and cereals etc and frankly, his technique could do with improving

i am, like you, wary of cutting it out of his diet... i just feel such a twat giving him this nonsense.

i tried goats milk too, btw. no joy there eityher.

hang on, let me get this straight, he's on follow on milk, basically?

ooh yes, HIPP organic, ds at nursery, have been there if so.

it was quite simple to get him off it really, just saved a few bottles and filled them with other milk.

A friend did similar but mixed half half, quarter-three quarters etc, cos she is nicer than me

RustyBear · 22/04/2007 18:53

DS used to have a milk like this (can't remember the brand, but it was 18 years ago!) as a daytime drink, but like you I wanted to get him off it & on to cow's milk - I just started adding a little bit of cow's milk & gradually increasing it until it was all cow - he didn't seem to notice - don't know if this would work for you.

SaintGeorge · 22/04/2007 18:53

How about trying to mix it with cows milk and seeing if you can get it down him that way? You could increase the cows milk to aptamil ratio gradually.

Gawd this stuff is really expensive isn't it. Have you checked that this is to do with taste rather than habbit, ie pouring cows milk into a bottle when they are not looking and then pouring it for them? Maybe you would see this as dishonest.
Is it a sweeter taste, can you add a bit of honey to cows milk and warm it, and gradually reduce the honey?

NappiesGalore · 22/04/2007 20:11

it is MUCH sweeter than cows milk. i think thats the prob. i think so.
i think we've tried mixing it and he still retched.
i think we tried watering it down... cant remember what upshot of that was...
i like the devious idea of putting cows milk into the bottles... would have to add honey to start with... this is going to be long anmd drawn out isnt it

fussy little git

as long as it doesnt make him retch again, it may work... i guess i'll come back to this if it doesnt work!
thanks for ideas people (even if they are all the same idea)

I made the same mistake with Hipp follow on milk - as it is vanilla flavoured I just weaned him off it by adding a tiny drop of proper vanilla extract to cows milk for a few days and then just gave him the cows milk on its own.

I do still keep some hipp milk in the cupboard for emergencies though (as we are always running out of fresh milk in this house)

NappiesGalore · 22/04/2007 20:52

vanilla essense! wasasuarus, that is inspired. really dont want to be eroding his teeth any more than i need to... thanks

Washersaurus · 22/04/2007 20:54

It was only a tiny tiny bit I promise - it was the only way I could get him off that damn follow-on stuff . He ALWAYS brushes his teeth like a good boy anyway

Washersaurus · 22/04/2007 20:55

And it was Pure vanilla extract - NOT cheapy vanilla essence!

NappiesGalore · 22/04/2007 20:56

no is a fab idea, and much preferable to adding honey or other sweetners i feel.
marvellous.

OP posts:
Washersaurus · 22/04/2007 20:59

I only had to do it because we were in the States on honeymoon and didn't take enough Hipp milk with us. You should see some of the crap they put in their baby milk - we weren't going to touch that stuff!

NappiesGalore · 23/04/2007 17:53

sounds alarming
