I didn't read the back of the packet, and need my chicken soup ready before DH heads off for night shift at 5.. so I just rinsed the mix and bunged it in with the soup without pre soaking overnight...Will it be ok? It won't poison us or anything?

It will take longer to cook.

Simmer it all afternoon on the lowest heat possible and just check the pulses have softened/bulked up. Or give him a can of Heinz today as broth is always better on day 2.

It will be safe to eat though, if it softens in time?

no no but it wont be soft. so youll need to keep it cooking lot longer on low heat.KEEP CHECKING IT.it will be easier to cath on bottom of pan and it will keep and keep soooooaking lots of liquid up so make some stock on the side to keep topping it up.
our broth mix is lentils and grains and I think the longest time to cook if ive done them unsoaked is pearly barley of 1 1/2 hours to cook.so you should be fine.dont quote me on that but I think so.

If it's the usual broth mix - pearl barley, red lentil, split peas - it should be ok. I'd soak it in boiling water for about half an hour before cooking just to speed it up.
