what if you can't bloody afford it? Have just read Sophable's post about only buying wild salmon, feel horribly guilty about buying non-organic/battery chicken but at the moment, its either that or nothing. Whilst I am happy to be veggie for most of the time, my DH and kids aren't.

So what to do - not eat salmon etc and live off seasonal local veggies? Or live with the guilt?

Don't eat chicken. It is not a necessary part of your diet. If you think what a battery hen goes through and all the antibiotics, I think its probably actively bad for you.

Yes, I do think it is better to go without that eat a non-organic chicken. (wow, look at me getting off the fence!)

We pretty much gave up meat because we couldn't afford to buy decent, ethically reared, traceable stuff and felt we couldn't go on consuming the products of cruelty and slovenly farming practice. It's perfectly do-able.

If you want to know why factory farmed chickens are bigger, do a little research on body building - steroids, drugs - and then add a little water to plump them up.

my ds eats so much chicken, he couldn't live without it. though i suppose i should put more effort into finding better producers.

FMV at your already fucked body!!

I do lots of the things suggested here - I buy cheaper cuts (although these are still not organic) and am a pretty okay cook. I do make soups etc from bones and carcasses to save money and also because they're so tasty and do lots of meat free meals for me and the kids - veggie pastas etc.

Cod, your posts always make me laugh! I actually would prefer my meat to have lived a happy life. Good karma and all that. What goes around comes around IMO

Don't waste your money on organic fish, they are still fed antibiotics and treated for sea lice because they are kept in confined spaces, and the fish trawled from the bottom of the ocean to feed these organically farmed fish is ecologically very bad. It's still farmed fish. Better to get wild line cought sustainable varieties of fish, there are plenty of them, here is a list of some. They are not all as expensive as wild salmon.
