my ds is nearly 8 months and i have been thinking about giving him fish oils - anyone done this if so how, is it appropriate? - to date he is not that keen on oily fish but manage to get him to take a few ground flax seeds with his breakfast, i took them during pregnancy and while i was breastfeeding a bit worried that his diet is now defficient in them.

I give my two older children a fish oil supplement as they won't eat oily fish. (Don't blame them - yuk yuk yuk.) I spoke to my HV about DS3 taking them and she said it was best to wait until they're a year old. There's a supplement called 'eye q' which costs £9.99 a bottle in boots or tesco which the pharmacist told me was suitable from this age. Tastes orangey so mine will take it fine.

there was a good thread on eye-q here a week or two ago and i started ds on it then, i'm not sure what to look for in the way of benefits but it's definately not doing him any harm, and his excema is improving

I would use flax seed oil over fish oil with such a young baby. My ds won't be having fish until at least 3 because of allergies, so it's obviously not the end of the world if an 8 month old doesn't like fish yet.

we use eskimo oil for our 8mth old, it is one of the purest fish oils you can get, fish are from unpolluted artic seas. is suitable from birth and has lemon flavour and no fishy taste.
there have been loads of threads in this one.

Can anyone give me a quite summary on the ebenefits of fish oils for babies/toddlers? I know there are threads but they are so long!!!!

gloworm · 22/07/2004 11:02

the main benefit at this age is brain development. good for helping prevent/treat things like dyslexia, add, adhd, hyperactivity.
also good for dry skin, eczema, joints, immune system, memory, concentration, constipation,

there are other reasons but they escape me at the moment
