DD2's 4th bithday party is at 4pm tommorow afternoon. I haven' done anything about a cake yet. I'm busy all tommorow morning. What's my best bet.I want it to be a bit impressive, as the parents are staying. There will be 20 children. ADVICE PLEASE!

supermarket and buy one

or if you want to make one what does she like? you could make a princess if you have a pudding bowl

parents will be more impressed with a glass of wine than the cake IMO

Twiglett · 16/04/2007 17:22

ok .. a boy

you could make a castle?

Make a tray bake - use a madeira type cake recipe, add cocoa perhaps - re decoratiing... a smartie extravaganza perhaps with some really good chocolate ganache icing. Simple but delish.

bungalowbelle · 16/04/2007 17:25

Make a castle. Buy swiss rolls for the turrets and chocolate fingers cut in half and stuck in to make a fence. Tin foil for the moat and a drawbridge made out of either matchmakers stuck together or choc fingers.

Oh, and hurry up. Look sharp.

Twiglett · 16/04/2007 17:25

square or round cake

cover in the icing you can knife on

get a stencil of something he likes (draw it on card and cut out or a cookie cutter) and sprinkle on sprinkles to make the shape

Twiglett · 16/04/2007 17:26

for grass use dessicated coconut and green food colouring .. shove in a bag and shake

bungalowbelle · 16/04/2007 17:27

Come on then. Spit spot!
What are you doing here still?

bungalowbelle · 16/04/2007 17:27

Twig I tried the dessicated coconut for grass thing but the colouring stayed in blobs in the coconut. Why?

2 sponges cut up and piled into volcano shape, cover in chocolate icing, then a drizzle of red/orange for the hot bits. Surround with plastic dinosaurs.

southeastastra · 16/04/2007 17:27

i do like this!

OK, it's going to be a castle. I think I can do it. My interpritation of a volcano would just turn into a tragic mess. As soon as the C's are in bed I'll be off to buy the stuff. I'll post the result on here tommorow evening. Thanks everyone.

make chocolate sponge, ice and fill with choc butetrcream and make a big 4 out of smarties on top

chocolateface · 16/04/2007 19:00

OOOOOO, that sounds easier. Can I just by the sponges? Which cakes would be best?

Asda do some nice cakes plain or fancy at a really reasonable and are open late and open early if you don't want to cook.

Twiglett · 16/04/2007 19:04

castle

square cake
swiss rolls for turrets and top with upside down ice cream cones
cover all in fondant icing .. use mini marshmallows for crenellations
ice-cream wafers for doors
use green writing icing for ivy growing up walls and brick work
use sweets for windows

easy-peasy

Unfortunately I haven't been able to get my photos off my card reader, so I can't show you the castle cake I made . I had a slight panick last night when Sainsburys didnt't have any cones, but I managed to find some in a local shop. All together the ingredients cost just over £20 but it only two about 1/4 hour to construct, & DS was really helpfull, sticking on the sweets. Disaster struck on the way to the party when all the towers collapsed as I went round a roundabout. Just about managed ti stick it back together......sort of!
Thanks to every one for your advice!
