apples at the bottom, kind of dough on top, cooked on the hob - what's it called?

I'm looking for a recipe whose name I forgot (and I never knew in English anyway). I remember it being very simple, you put the apples at the bottom of the pan, some kind of doughy mixture on top, cook it on the hob, then turn it upside down and use cream or similar on top of the apples. What's it called, please, so i can look for it in recipe books? Thanks.

tarte tatin?

tigerschick · 13/04/2007 15:21

sounds like it to me, oranges.

I thought this was in the style section and was a description of someone's figure

Tarte tatin, except it is finished in the oven

CristinaTheAstonishing · 13/04/2007 15:24

I'll look up tarte tatin. I didn't remember the oven bit, you can see I haven't done it in years (about 20). I had it about a month ago and remembered how nice & easy it was to make. Thank you.

And Idreamofdaleks, that's funny, it can read like that too!

One last question on the topic - I've looked up tarte tatin and all recipes have puff pastry. I'm 100% sure I never used this, can puff pastry be replaced with simple flour and something else? Thanks.

You could use short crust, are you thinking of an apple cobbler by any chance?

CristinaTheAstonishing · 13/04/2007 15:49

I couldn't find a photo of apple cobbler but the recipe sounded more like what I remember (although, bizarrely, none mention the hob bit, just the oven). I have all or most of the ingredients so I'll give it a try. Thank you very much.

Apple cobbler is delicious, in fact I think I might make it tonight too

CristinaTheAstonishing · 13/04/2007 15:57

I think I've solved in my head the mystery of the hob vs oven bit. I never had a proper flan dish (if that's what they're called) so I used to use a normal pot. I must have kept in my mind the image of the pot as going on the hob rather than in the oven, just because that's where they usually go. I'll let you know how it came out. Thanks again.

tarte tatin doesn't have to be finished in the oven. The tatin sisters who invented the dish (honest) made it on the bob. I think. Good luck.

Carmenere · 13/04/2007 16:15

Oranges I'm sorry to differ but it does have to be finished in the oven, otherwise how would the pastry cook and afaik they did finish it in the oven.

oranges · 13/04/2007 16:19

oops, you are right. Sorry. Will get back to work now instead of day dreaming about puddings.

Carmenere · 13/04/2007 16:19

And I am off to the shops to but the apples
