Do you precook rhubarb before putting it in a crumble?

I do, but I'm wondering if it is strictly necessary. Also, how little sugar can I get away with? I never know how much to use, just end up guessing.

I don't cook rhubarb for crumbles but no idea about sugar, I just guess too!

DebitheScot · 12/04/2007 16:47

ah crap, I was meant to make a rhubarb crumble today. I forgot until you reminded me! Can't be bothered now though.
I wouldn't cook it first but then that doesn't mean you shouldn't. As for sugar, just chuck some in.

deffo

MrsSpoon · 12/04/2007 16:51

I don't cook it first. I put it in the dish and sprinkle with three tablespoons of sugar then add the crumble topping and stick in the oven for half an hour.

kks · 12/04/2007 16:52

No i don't. I leave it to cook in the oven for about 40-50mins.

kks · 12/04/2007 16:53

Try apple and rhubarb crumble. Yum!

Tamum · 12/04/2007 16:54

I precook it, and I suppose it's easier to judge whether it needs more sugar that way?

foxinsocks · 12/04/2007 16:55

No - but I often chuck a spoon of honey and some ginger on top of the rhubarb (before the crumble goes on).

kks · 12/04/2007 16:56

yum! You have made me want crumble now!

TooTicky · 12/04/2007 16:57

Ooh, lots of ideas - thanks!

Rhubarb and banana is a great combination too, and the sweetness of the banana means you add less sugar.

drosophila · 12/04/2007 20:33

God I love Rhubarb. Do you think it will be the next super food? Hope so.

drosophila · 12/04/2007 20:34

My mum alwyas put raw rhubarb in a pie/tart and loads of sugar. I mean loads. I have read somewhere you can do it either way.

Scootergirl · 12/04/2007 20:35

I mix it with some apple and honey in the dish it will be cooked in then roast it for about 30 minutes before putting the crumble on top. Delish!

tassis · 12/04/2007 20:36

I do and just toss in the sugar and keep tasting till it's sweet enough!

I try to freeze it ready stewed so crumble making's dead easy

Do love rhubarb...bought some rhubarb plants today!

drosophila · 12/04/2007 20:39

Just been reading about it on wekipedia it is an impressive plant.

TooTicky · 12/04/2007 22:56

I did precook it a bit (cowardly, I know) and used banana to replace some of the sugar - it was yum.
Scootergirl, next time I shall try it your way...
