If cheese is involved do check it’s vegetarian.

LoniceraJaponica · 28/10/2017 20:16

Veggie pigs in blankets just don't work. I'm with Bike regarding veggie bacon. The Quorn cocktail sausages are, IMO, the best veggie sausages.

I have a nice looking recipe for a shallot and chestnut tart tatin that I might do this year.

WillowySnicket · 28/10/2017 20:44

Halloumi is a good meat substitute I find. Has the same salty hit as bacon but nice meaty chew! Could do a halloumi wrapped in...courgette ribbon? Hmmmm

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/10/2017 20:47

I did pigs in blankets last year, with the Quorn cocktail sausages and Quorn bacon. I rubbed olive oil onto the bacon to stop it going too brittle. They were actually quite nice.

GinUnicorn · 28/10/2017 20:47

Disagree re veggie bacon! Fry the quorn veggie bacon in butter and it is lovely! Even meat eaters like it. Love the thread btw. I am going to attempt it roast this year. I usually cheat and buy m&s

MagdalenLaundry · 28/10/2017 20:47

I have 2 favourites. One was a steamed pudding I think it had roasted vegetables and brown rice inside
The other was chestnut pate in puff pastry with red wine gravy
They are both Rose Elliot recipes

perhapstomorrow · 28/10/2017 20:55

This is my favourite. It freezes really well so can be made in advance.

In the past I have made veggie wellington , choux pastry mushroom thing , Puff pastry squares with. Caramelised onion and goat cheese. Whatever you do it has to go with the same accompaniments the meat eaters are getting or it is a right Swizz.

LoniceraJaponica · 28/10/2017 21:26

The idea for the roulade sounds nice, except for the parsnip puree. I would substitute carrot puree or butternut squash puree instead. I loathe parnsips.

Music I give you Vegan pigs in blankets we have them every year and really enjoy them. You can get this with turkey and gravy powder, or just a pack of 8 pigs in blankets. Can buy online or in holland and Barrat type places, Ocado and Morrisons stock some of that range so not sure if they will get these in this year

LoniceraJaponica · 28/10/2017 22:07

I bought somw veggie pigs in blankets from Holland and Barrett last year and they were vile. However, while googling I found this idea which sounds delicious.

I bought a big bag of dried sindried tomatoes on holiday in Sicily this year and will soak them and try it out.

IamEarthymama · 28/10/2017 22:15

MagdalenLaundy that's our annual Christmas lunch from the amazing Rose Elliott. πŸ˜ŠπŸŽ„
Now I am gluten free DW and I have separate ones as non gf pastry is MUCH nicer.
I love it with fry up on Boxing Day

MusicToMyEars800 · 28/10/2017 22:27

Just wanted to say thank you to all of you for fab recipes and suggestions, for Nut roasts and veggie pigs in blankets.

OP, thanks for starting this thread Smile

ReMyDog · 28/10/2017 22:32

All of theses sound so delicious that I am tempted to forgo the annual Christmas turkey and I make a mean one with onion sage sausage stuffing.

gaijin has just triggered my Christmas spirit, much to early but I don't mind.

any of these with an excellent Wine.

Gaijin1 what's your filling and can I google the recipe. I love the Christmassy deco on the pastry. Is it fill pastry or home made something or other?

Dunno about pigs in blankets but I made vegan devils on horseback’s last year which were gobbled up by the omnivores
