Ways with quinoa

Does anyone have any good recipes using quinoa? I'm particularly looking for a recipe that DS (7 month old spoon dodger) can also enjoy....so 'patty' type ideas would be good. Can quinoa be pattified?

yes pattify it into a nice round shape then throw it into the bin. Spawn of the devil food.

SpawnChorus · 11/04/2007 21:55

lol! (But not at all helpful )

suejonez I agree - I think it tastes like sperm mixed with soap

my local health food shop palmed me off with some red quinoa on the grounds it was so much tastier. They lied - tastes like red sperm with soap

maveta · 11/04/2007 22:00

lol at suejonez - all I could think was ´yeah put it in the bin´ too! ´orrible stuff.

suejonez · 11/04/2007 22:00

I was told that you have to rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse then when you have rinsed enough rinse once more. WHY??? WHYYYY?

suejonez · 11/04/2007 22:01

sorry spawny - but the truth is sometimes painful to hear

yesireallycan · 11/04/2007 22:01

How about risotto instead?? That can be pattified and does not usually taste of sperm. My DD likes butternut squash risotto. Or pea and ham.

Brangelina · 11/04/2007 22:05

Maybe it can if you mix it with something that binds, like potato or egg or lentils or something. Alternatively you could buy quinoa flakes and make porridge. Sorry I can't be of more help but have only ever fed it to DD on a spoon. I did, however, make kofte which are lentil and bulghur wheat patties, so maybe you could just substitute the quinoa for the wheat. It's basically cook the (red) lentils, cook the quinoa, season with tomato puree, fry onions with garlic and some ground cumin, mix everything together, add a bit of lemon juice, form patties and bung in the oven for about 10 mins

lolololol at you quinoa-haters!

Yesireallycan - ummm do you mean make risotto with quinoa? If you mean I should make it with rice, then I'm not interested I've got a packet of quinoa languishing in my cupboard and goddammit I'm going to feed it to my baby. With a side order of sperm and soap.

at the quinoa baiters

I have never pattified it but possibly it can be done

does he eat egg? I can't think how else you would get it to stick together. Aitch would know, maybe?

When he can start to use a spoon it will be much easier. I make a kind of sweet quinoa porridge with cooked quinoa, milk, vanilla / cinnamon and mashed banana. You could add raisins or yogurt or so on. Till then I thik quinoa is a terribly messy food at the best of times

oh you can get it in chunk form called quinova but that really was quite NASTY

suejonez · 11/04/2007 22:07

poor baby - I may have to inform social services

SpawnChorus · 11/04/2007 22:08

Brangelina - thank you thank you That's just the sort of quinoa wizardry I was after. You are fab.

Quinoa baiter?? I am not a quinoa baiter.. I don´t want it anywhere near me, not trying to entice it closer in any way shape or form.

Mumbojumbo · 11/04/2007 22:11

Have a look here:

quinoa recipes

Some of the recipes look OK to me (I quite like quinoa!).

Also found this which you might be able to adapt:
QUINOA PUDDING
1 cup quinoa
2 cups apple juice
1 cup raisins
1 cup chopped nuts
juice of 1 lemon
cinnamon to taste
2tsp vanilla extract
Berries, sliced banana or maple syrup (optional)

Place quinoa in a sieve and wash it well under cold running water. Drain and place in pot with 2cups of cold water. Bring to the boil, cover, lower heat, and boil gently until al the water is absorbed, and quinoa is tender, about 15mins.
Measure 2cups of cooked quinoa and to it add the apple juice, raisins, nuts, lemon juice, also cinnamon and salt to taste. Simmer covered for 15mins.
Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
Chill, serve plain or with berries or sliced banana or maple syrup.

SueJonez -

Franny - thank you too...Yes, he does eat egg, so can use that as a binding agent. Or quinoa omelette anyone? lol.

I did mean rice, I was trying to distract you from your quinoa foolishness.

suejonez · 11/04/2007 22:19

or you could just feed him the egg and spare him the quinoa.
