What's your children's favourite meal?

Miaou · 17/07/2004 18:40

OK, for tea tonight my kids had a bowlful of brown pasta twirls, topped with finely grated mature cheddar, to which I added a smiley face using tomato ketchup. This is their favourite meal and takes about 5mins to make which makes it my favourite too! They would have it every day if they could.

Anyone else's kids have a particular favourite?

ds's favourite would probably be a big bowl of what he calls trees, clouds and fingers (broccoli, cauliflower and baby corn cobs to you and me!). Closely followed by pasta with pesto, and sausages.

bundle · 20/07/2004 11:09

beety, my 2 dds also love garlic & chilli olives..i foolishly thought the strong flavours would put them off, and they would be MUMMY'S olives

busybee123 · 20/07/2004 11:11

Hulababy · 20/07/2004 19:27

I have an olive eating DD too. She has only recently gotten in to them though at just over 2yo. Before that they were mummy's!!! Now I have to share

Juliehafrancis · 20/07/2004 23:01

Dd meals consist of

Banana and cereal for breakfast or if mummy is being really nice then toast spreaded very thinly with low sugar/low salt ketchup with scrambled eggs

Tortilla wrap/pitta bread filled with chicken mayonaise and grated cheese
Sticks of cucumber
Low salt cheese dipper
Carton of organic fruit juice
Yogurty fruit flakes
Ham sandwiches
Boursin..loves it although mummy doesn't when she does a burp in her face!

Loves Eggy bread with lean and low bacon and whole tin of low sugar low salt baked beans
Also loves pasta, chicken, pesto with a little bit of cream
Cabonara
Mini toad in the hole's
Loves grilled lamb, tuna or salmon
Fave pasta dish is alphabet or dinoasaur pasta with smoked salmon and boursin cheese with garlic bread!

Have a very hard time trying to get any veg/fruit into her but still trying!

DS1 - hummous with things to dip in to it. Today he dipped bread sticks (his usual choice) and also those Cow & Gate savoury biscuits that smell like dog biscuits (have not tasted them so don't know about that!) and then he moved on to....Shreddies - yes, dipped in hummous - yeuch.
DS2 - anything

woodpops · 21/07/2004 08:27

My dd loves tomato macaroni with homemade melba toast. It's fab. So easy to make and really tasty. Dh doesn't do pasta so I never used to cook it before kids came along. Now ds and dd both love it. It's sooooooooooooo much better than normal macaroni cheese!!! Like hulas dd my ds is rather partial to a sausage or 2. Any type, even an Ikea hotdog.

Hulababy · 21/07/2004 08:34

Woodpops - we are taking DD to Florida next month and she is already excited............ about the giant hot dogs my sister has told her they sell there!

woodpops · 21/07/2004 09:12

Bless her, I betr she'll still be craving a REAL Eniglish sausage when she gets home. I know I was when I went to the states. Have a fab holiday though. I'd love to take ds and dd to Florida but I have recently discovered I have developed a totally irrational fear of flying!!!!

Hulababy · 21/07/2004 09:16

I also hate flying. I blame it on only ever flying as an adult and knowing the (percieved) risks. I am a nightmare and sit rigid in my seat the whole time, seat belt on. Was worse before DD arrived. have to be brave now. Luckily I can control it enough to no stop my going on holiday and the fear only kicks in during the week before I go.

Now, air meals? Wonder if any favouries will come out of that!!!

woodpops · 21/07/2004 10:26

You're a better woman than me hula. I had to pull out of a hen weekend recently because we were flying there. It was only a 40 minute flight as well!!!!! I did have a nasty experience flying back in 95. The stupid thing is I've flown since then. Who knows just what goes on in my head. I wish I did!!!!!!

Hulababy · 21/07/2004 10:28

I pulled out of a flight we had booked in venezula. Dh booked a "treat" flight over the big falls there. But it was on a tiny little plane and I just couldn't do it. We told the travel rep it was becuase I was suffering from severe morning sickness and wouldn't be okay so enclosed (partially true anyway). Just the tought of it made me shudder. The bigger flights aren't so bad once I am on there! It is just getting on I have the trouble with - oh and the setting off and landing.

CountessDracula · 21/07/2004 10:31

Apparantly you can go on a course to get rid of fear of flying. Must be horrible. I know someone who had to give up his job because he developed this suddenly.

Hulababy · 21/07/2004 10:33

How about hypnotherapy?

DH's grandad's wife is terrified of flying. She has never flown and has always refused to, even though there are places abroad she would have loved to go to. She is now in her 80s.

woodpops · 21/07/2004 10:41

Thought about it but at the mo don't plan on flying in the near future. I stick to holidaying at Center Parcs!!!! THanks anyway. I suppose we'd better get this thread back on track. I need inspiration for dd breakfast. I've tried everything and still she won't eat any breakfast!!!!

Gingerbear · 21/07/2004 13:27

back to fave meals...

dd likes:
sausages
chicken cooked Jamie Oliver Stylee (in a foil parcel with veggies, garlic and olive oil in the oven)
rice, peas and trees (broccoli)
plain pasta

'picnic' - a bit of everything on one plate

choc mousse or fruit for desert

Gingerbear · 21/07/2004 13:28

dd's brekky fave - eggy bread spread with marmite (I like this one too!!)

StickyNote · 21/07/2004 13:32

Gingerbear, how do you do that Jamie Oliver chicken?

Hulababy · 21/07/2004 13:32

Another vote for eggy bread for breakfast from my DD too.

Hulababy · 21/07/2004 13:33

Gingerbear - we do the foil meals of JO's too. Sometimes switch for fish as well.

Juliehafrancis · 21/07/2004 22:55

Woodpops could you please post the recipe for your tomato maccaroni and homemade melba toast and hulababy/gingerbear what veg do you put in the parcels?

honeybunny · 22/07/2004 08:35

My 2 love a good roast (any beast or fowl will do) with all the trimmings, baked ham and parsley sauce, oxtail, lamb shanks, sausages braised in cider, plus all the usual fish fingers, bangers and mash, spag bol, mac cheese with ham and broccoli thrown in etc.
We can never get out of the house without a steaming bowl of porridge either.

Hulababy · 22/07/2004 08:51

Stickynote - hope Gingerbear doesn't mind but the two JO recipes for chicken in a bag I have of JO's are:

RECIPE ONE

Chicken breast baked in a bag with mushrooms, butter, white wine and thyme

  • make bag out of foil, leaving one side open for now
  • preheat oven to 220c/gas 7
  • in a bowl mix together: chicken breast, handful of dried porcini, some mixed mushrooms, large knobs of butter, fresh thyme, some peeled and sliced garlic cloves and a glass of white wine (replace with non-alcoholic liquid if necessary)
  • carefully pour all into foil pouch/bag
  • close up the foil bag by folding over foil over opening
  • slide onto baking tray
  • bake in middle of oven for 25 minutes

Can alter contents easily - JO recommends grated parsnips, smoked bacon and red wine. I have done variations on this using white fish as well. You do need some liquid for the chicken to cook in - so if not using wine at least use some form of stock or water.

RECIPE TWO

Chicken breast baked in a bag with cannellini beans, leeks, cream and majoram

  • make foil bag, leaving one side open
  • preheat oven to 220c/gas 7
  • trim and wash some baby leeks, cook in boiling water for 2 minutes to soften
  • mush a handful of drained and washed cannellini beans in your hand to a mush and place in a large bowl
  • drain leeks and then mix in the bowl with the mushed beans, some more drained and washed cannelini beans, chicken breat, sliced garlic clove, some majoram or oregano, small glass of white wine, some double cream and seasoning.
  • Close up and seal foil pouch/bag
  • slide onto roasting tray
  • cook in oven for 25 minutes

JO's variations include cooked new potatoes, teaspoon of wholegrain mustard, handfuls of raw spinach. This one makes quite a creamy sauce.

Hope these help! Thing about these JO recipes is the quantities can be whatever you like, and you can change the contents so easily. Make them in advance and just put them in the oven as and when needed.

StickyNote · 22/07/2004 08:53

Thanks very much Hulababy, guess what we're having for tea tonight??

Angeliz · 22/07/2004 08:54
