What would you cook if you had a (lovely) French chef coming to stay over Easter?

Something typically British.
Probably a roast and a crumble or a trifle.

aol · 04/04/2007 18:19

We are talking four or five days here....

Going to do roast lamb with mint sauce and redcurrent jelly for Easterlunch but need pudding ideas

Seafood is an obvious
Going to do a curry (French don't tend to cook curries at home)
Roast beef done on the plancha, with yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes done in oven (both novelties)
Turbot seems to be in season.

I need some ideas please - and puddings!

They are arriving late Friday evening, so ideally need a supper that I can do in the slow cooker - (need a really good slow cooker recipe) that doesnt mind hanging round if they are late.

The most wonderfully lethal easter pudding is your basic Bread and Butter pudding, but instead of bread, use hotcross buns - it is really good!

Cold cuts and salads for lunch -

A scoop of lemon sorbet served with a small shot of vodka and a sprig of mint - makes a change from heavy stuff

Stewed peaches with creme fraiche

cheat and serve Gu souffles - always a big hit in our house.

Don't forget the cheese.

aol · 04/04/2007 18:46

Sigh. I am in France and can only get hot cross buns if I make my own!

OP posts:

What are Gu souffles?

Aol, I know you are a good cook so don't stress because he will just be wanting to have a nice time not a michelan star experience.
A good slow-cook dish is lambshanks braised with apricots, harissa/chilli's and cinnamon and cumin with butterbeans. Kind of Moroccan-ish oh but you are doing lamb already.

B&B pudding is also fab made with brioche.

How about teriake chicken or fish with noodles?

Or Thai curry with Thai fishcakes to start?

Coolmama · 04/04/2007 18:57

sorry - didn't realise you weren't in the UK! - Gu is a make of desserts here that you can buy which are ready to serve or put in the oven (like the souffle) and they are very good in a tight spot.
How about Welsh rarebit?

aol · 06/04/2007 12:01

Going to do bread and butter with pain au chocolat, lemon drizzle as second pudding

Bought a turbot, will do it with carrots vichy and sardines done on the plancha and choc mousse as starter and pudding
Then lamb, roast cauliflower/pots on sunday with courgette gratin iwth greek salad a la nigella to start and then one of above puddings
sunday evening traditionally oysters here
Monday bbq lunch and squid and chorizo done with red peppers as supper

aol · 06/04/2007 12:24

How the fk do you cook turbot wongy? Shall I just say to him "I bought us all a turbot" and hand the beast (size of a small stingray) over?

OP posts:
aol · 06/04/2007 12:25

i would like to make hot cross buns. Has anyone a good, simple reliable recipe please?

OP posts:
NorksDrift · 06/04/2007 12:29

here

sunnywong · 06/04/2007 12:31

I think you can do the baked in salt thing with a turbot. I'm sure old smartarse rick stein has a turbot recipe, in fact I know he does

if you really want to impress him no end, hand him the turbot's liver - a real delicacy.

hot cross buns have to be done with an enriched yeast dough

faff.

aol · 06/04/2007 12:31

merci!

aol · 06/04/2007 12:32

I had the turbot gutted. Fishmonger probably has collection of said livers on ze side to take home.

OP posts:
sunnywong · 06/04/2007 12:33

pshaw

they'll be over the border to Andora for the turbot live pate trade before you can say Jaques fils de Robin

aol · 06/04/2007 12:35

Spanish auchan has most impressive fish section ever seen in my life and they gut and do everything for you, even the octopus. French auchan just shrug and look at their watches if you ask for anything too tricky. Spanish auchan probably offer carpaccio de foie de Turbot as an optional extra.

dunno about andorra though, apart from cheap cigarettes.....
