Why dion't you just give him what you'r having? An 11mo can eat anything, allergies aside, except perhaps seafood (wait till 2yrs).

Most everyday food can be eaten as finger food - even mashed potato (well, in our house anyway ).

Nip · 03/04/2007 13:45

my DS LOVES fish fingers (without the bread crumbs) and peas - he'll sit for ages picking them up and eating them.

Also spaghetti on toast - messy but he enjoys this

suejonez · 03/04/2007 13:48

I gave mine elvery thing as finger food just made it all drier - potatoes, peas veg, fish fingers, bread, pasta (very little sauce - just enough to coat with me spoon feeding the sauce), avocado, fruit, bread sticks.

Only thing which didn;t work as finger food - jar baby food, stews, couscous

kitty17 · 03/04/2007 13:50

He loves fish fingers and mashed potatoe, tried him last night with mince, but he spat it out even when mixed through the potatoe, He does like spaghetti and loves toast in the morning.
I try him with everything we have, he even eats after having his own dinner!!!!.
Looking for a few new ideas to give him... instead of the normal things we eat....

My Ds didnt life mince to start with - but i had to use the hand blender to cut it up a bit - this helped loads.

waffles - not sure if the food police will shout at me, but my DS likes these.

cheese on toast

sandwiches (usually end up on DS's head and rubbed into his hair!)

bread sticks

celery sticks, carrot sticks, cucumber, peppers

I'm trying to think of more for you! (its a nightmare isnt it! - i've really struggled to be inspirational too!) - Most of my ideas come from Annabel Karmels book.

Nip · 03/04/2007 13:58

*like not life - sorry

suejonez · 03/04/2007 13:59

nip I alsi grind up the mince in a blender DS finds it too big otehrwise.

Are you really trying to find new and exciting things? Gosh thats shows me up - I really don;t bother if DS is happy with his food and eating enough thats fine by me.

suejonez · 03/04/2007 14:00

my DS always spite out the first mouthful of new food but eat it later in the meal. Try not mixing it with potato - some childrne prefer their food separate

TeeCee · 03/04/2007 14:04

As long as you don't mind a bit of mess then he can have anything and everything you can think of really but if it's easy finger food you are after how about:

sweet potato wedges
chicken nuggets you can make yourself (mince your own breasts in food processor, add grated cheese and a bit on onio and garlic, dip into flour, then egg then wholemeal breadcrumbs or try crushed cornflakes, then freeze a load and when defrosted cook for about 15 mins)
lemon sole goujons (see above but used strips of fish rather than mince up the chicken)
any veg steamed
mackeral fillets
sandwiches (cream cheese and grated carrot for example)
cheese, crackers, cgerry toms halved, strips of cucimber and peppers

BigEggLittleEgg · 03/04/2007 14:04

My DS loves fishcakes (but I normally take most of the breadcrumb bit off and eat it myself ). Also loves plain baked salmon, quiche, (again I dont give him the pastry bit), sausages, mash. He does love cottage pie and spagbol, but if your DS is not sure about mince then these are no good.

I usually give him his veg as a finger food, like broccoli, asparagus, carrot. Loves cucumber sticks and would eat them all day.

Philadelphia sandwiches are good as they dont tend to fall apart as cheese is nice and sticky!

I too need more inspiration as DS tends to get the same stuff rotated every couple of days!

BigEggLittleEgg · 03/04/2007 14:05

LOL TeeCee at "mince your own breasts in food processor" !!!!!!

Nip · 03/04/2007 14:06

PMSL!

TeeCee · 03/04/2007 14:07

Oh and pasta - thing s like penne so he can use his fingers (although lots of blw's give their kids normal spaghetti)
Pour over a home made spag bol sauce with loads of veg in it and grated cheese.

Avocado cut into strips

TeeCee · 03/04/2007 14:08

Hah haaaaaaa, sorry, PMSL
No do watch out you don't dangle your own breats into the food procesor while mincing some shop bought chicken breasts!

Clary · 03/04/2007 14:19

Big egg what's wrong with pastry?

suejonez · 03/04/2007 14:21

I was going to ask the same thing?

BigEggLittleEgg · 03/04/2007 14:31

Ah nothing's wrong with pastry, just that he much prefers the middle eggy bit and if he ate the entire thing, pastry and all, it is about 500 cals which is a bit much for a boy of 13 months in one meal. He nibbles on a bit of it, and I eat the rest . I think because he has a small whole quiche, rather than a slice of a big one, there is a lot more pastry.

fizzbuzz · 03/04/2007 14:34

Home made cheese straws are yummy, but fatal. I ate nearly all of dd's

Also banana muffins with no sugar, she loves these, but again I eat them all.

fizzbuzz · 03/04/2007 14:34

Also home made custard lollies

TeeCee · 03/04/2007 14:36

Oh yes my DD's love home made banana loaf and carrot cake and fruit loaf.

BigEggLittleEgg · 03/04/2007 14:38

Oooooh custard lollies sound nice. Presume you just freeze custard in lolly moulds?

DS and I love custard .

TeeCee, think I will trying the breast mincing as think DS would love those nuggets, but have never dared give him any shop bought ones.

TeeCee · 03/04/2007 14:38

custard lollies??? Tell me more. They sound gross but maybe my kids will disagree.

I made a load of lollies yesterday by blitzing strawberries and rapberries and pomegrante bits in the food processor then freezing.

Made a few lollois in my time, prune juice was my cruelest but very popular creation! Never tried custard though.

I might try it but mix in some stewed apple, what do you think?

TeeCee · 03/04/2007 14:39

I served them (the chicken nuggets) at DD's birthday and what the kids couldn't finish the adults scoffed. They are soooooo nice.

Thought of another finger food - meatballs. Try turkey mince if he's not hugely keen on beef mince?

kitty17 · 03/04/2007 14:40

thanks for the food tips.... will make sure i dont put my breats in the blender tho...lol .
DD loves anything we have, but as soon as i give it as his own meal he is not interested, he finds it better to pick from out plates, which is ok, but would prefer him to eat form his own plate..hence why im trying to find out new things for him, im not the best in the kitchen (baking etc), but ok at making meals... will give a few of these a try... Thanks again

Well...make custard. Leave to cool. Pour into lolly moulds. Shove in freezer...it is really that easy......
