Mince, onions, mushrooms, tinned tomatoes, tomato puree, garlic, herbs (basil, oregano), and extra bits like bacon and red wine can make it a bit more interesting.

GooseyLoosey · 02/04/2007 18:11

Lamb mince is nice - never used turkey. Use spag bol to shovel green veg into the dcs - very finely chopped spinach gives it a slighly peppery taste and they would never eat it if presented to them on a plate. Also loads of peppers and sometimes even fairly finely chopped broccoli!

Nbg · 02/04/2007 18:12

Turkey mince is lovely.
I usually do tinned toms, onions, tom puree, garlic, mushrooms, olives, courgettes and occasionaly peppers.

Furball · 02/04/2007 18:12

leave out the ragu and use

mince, onion, garlic, tinned tomatoes,2 dessert spoons tom puree. spinach (i use 4 x cubes of frozen) peppers, mushrooms, then any othe left over veg like courgettes, aubugine etc. I also add quarter - to half teaspoon of liquid bovil.

BigCremeEggs · 02/04/2007 18:12

i usually use Beef or Lamb mice, 2 tins of chopped toms, green and red peppers, mushrooms, 2 bay leaves, crushed garlic, tomato puree, lea & Perrins.

baggybelly · 02/04/2007 18:14

I chuck in toms, garlic, carrots, courgettes, red peppers and worcestershire sauce & herbs. tried turkey mince but not keen - prefer quorn or beef

aDad · 02/04/2007 18:15

peppers, carrot, celery important i think.

I always splash in some balsamic vinegar, tomato puree, worcester sauce, pinch of sugar or tomato ketchup for sweetness.

Also think it's nicer with lentils not mince but i realise that most people will think differently! Definitely healthier that way too.

MrsBadger · 02/04/2007 18:15

carrot, celery, onions, garlic
beef mince
bit of flour to thicken sauce
tinned toms
tom puree
beef stock
basil
oregano
red wine
black pepper

not using Ragu really helps, else every time it just tastes of... Ragu.

HoraceWimp · 02/04/2007 18:16

mince, oxo cube, onion, mushroom, 2 clove garlic, chopped finely, tin of toms and tom puree and anything lying around that may be nice in it

juicychops · 02/04/2007 18:17

so using chopped tomatoes and puree is better than Ragu?

janeite · 02/04/2007 18:18

I always put a big splash of port in mine.

Molesworth · 02/04/2007 18:19

I use half pork mince, half beef mince

onions, celery, carrots finely chopped and softened

mushrooms

passata & tinned plum toms

red wine

best part of a jar of pesto

HoraceWimp · 02/04/2007 18:19

juicychops it tastes the same, only no additives or anything in it

LazyLine · 02/04/2007 18:21

Beef mince
A reduced red wine and worcestershire sauce mix
Onions and garlic
Passata (dont really like tomato chunks in with SB)
Tomato puree.
Herbs.
Maybe some mushrooms if I am feeling nice towards DH.

juicychops · 02/04/2007 18:21

aw, this is interesting! (how sad am i!)

now i have lots of things to try

OP posts:
Molesworth · 02/04/2007 18:22

I'm liking the idea of lentils instead of mince

Surely red lentils would go all squishy though?

LazyLine · 02/04/2007 18:22

How do you do it with the lentils aDad? Have never had them and would like to try, sounds like it could be a good way in SB...

LazyLine · 02/04/2007 18:23

Juicychops, it is also much cheaper than Ragu!!

noddyholder · 02/04/2007 18:26

Fry lardons of bacon and onion then add mince 2 tins tomatoes garlic tomato puree mixed italian herbs and red wine and simmer for at least an hour

Molesworth · 02/04/2007 18:26

ooh yes it's lovely with bacon in

greenday · 02/04/2007 18:26

A dash of tabasco sauce livens it up.

My MIL says a tsp of pesto does the trick as well.

spykid · 02/04/2007 18:27

mushrooms and courgettes
tom ketchup adds a little something too!

MrsBadger · 02/04/2007 18:28

(NB read the ingredients on the side of the jar of Ragu... can guarantee you'll want to switch to tomatoes & tom puree!)

Blandmum · 02/04/2007 18:28

Turkey mince is good als long as you have lots of other stuff in it too.

Toms, garlic, olive oil, basil, red wine, onions, sometimes carrots or musgrooms/celery. Lots of tom puree.

bacon is good

MrsBadger · 02/04/2007 18:29

oh, and if you taste it 10min before it's done and it's too acidic, teaspoon of brown sugar works wonders - same deal as adding ketchup
