I peel potatoes...cut into chips...add to slightly salted water....boil till soft but not breaking up.

drain...put on baking tray..drizzle with oil (not much needed)....bake for 10 mins then turn them over- move around tin..to coat all in oil...then finish in oven

Sweet potatoes make gorgeous chips.

pinkranger · 28/03/2007 13:31

I use rapeseed....as its lower in saturated fats than sunflower etc..unfortunately my kids reject the olive oil ones!! (i like them though!)

pccformerlyprincesscc · 28/03/2007 13:34

sliced parsnips are nice too

pinkranger · 28/03/2007 13:34

Olive Oil. Garlic crushed on top is yummy too.

ClutterJunkie · 28/03/2007 13:37

let me know if you do have a go!
(i adapted this from Slimming World...where we use spray oil....my kids and husband don't like them when i only use spray oil...so i find i can use a fairly small amount of normal oil... compared to deep frying...and all the family eat them.

you can also use new potatoes and not peel them..make wedges..and cook them as above.

mine always seem to stick to the tray? what am I doing wrong?

I have even tried tossing them in oil 1st but this dont help.

What gas mark do you use

southeastastra · 28/03/2007 14:45

i always put quite alot of oil in (probably very unhealthy) but they taste yum. and dry them after par boiling so they're really dry

suejonez · 28/03/2007 14:47

then after you have done all that - bin horrible homemade chips and go down the chippie for some "proper" chips

pinkranger · 28/03/2007 18:25

well i made them and they were really nice, i think i put to much oil on them as they were a bit greasy but my ds loved them
thnak you

glad all went well

jambuttie....i line my tray with 'baking parchement'...sometimes called by different name...like greaseprof paper...but fantastic as it does not stick!

a way of reducing the oil is to drain the potatoes - put back in pan you cooked them in...add a little oil and put lid on and tip pan upside down a coupe of times....carefully!!! this spreads the oil well....then tip onto baking tray...and BRUSH tops of chips with a little more oil.

to be honest though...i'm sure that ANY oven method is better than deep frying as far as fat content.....

(my fat obsession stems from having gallbladder problems...so had to experiment with lower fat methods that still tasted nice- as i LOVE food! I've now had my gallbladder removed...and find i still prefer the healthier options!)I also wiegh 12st (my doctor calculates me at needing to lose 3 stone...as i'm only 5'2"!!!)

ilovethis · 29/03/2007 09:54

make them fat and fry in olive oil with some garlic cloves cut in half

manuka · 01/04/2007 09:51

Olive oil is badly denatured when heated to high frying temperatures and is quite toxic. apparently! grapeseed is good at coping with high temps
