Does organic food taste much nicer than "normal" food?

I finally think I can afford organic food, thinking that it is going to be healthier for my children and myself.

But, we can't afford to buy everything organic food. TBH, we normally bought frozen veg rather then fresh.

So, if there is 3 food types that you would buy organic, what would it be?

Thanks

dairy produce, meat and celery

Greenleeves · 27/03/2007 21:22

Fruit
Veg
Dairy products

I would say bread was an essential too really, make your own if possible (it's cheaper too)

We don't really eat meat though, and fish we just try to get local and fresh.

So, is something like chicken much nicer for the cost paid? (can't really afford much, as we are skint!)

Everything you can but if forced to choose then eggs, carrots and potatoes.

I have a weekly organic box delivered and every now and again I buy some non organic stuff from the supermarket and I can really tell.

twocatsonthebed · 27/03/2007 21:23

I've been told root vegetables, as they store pesticides more than leafy ones.

For me, I'd also choose dairy, as switching to organic dairy made a big difference to my eczema.

jofeb04 · 27/03/2007 21:23

Spidermama,
Where you do buy the box from?

OP posts:
Spidermama · 27/03/2007 21:25

Riverford in Devon.

hairymclary · 27/03/2007 21:25

milk
any soft fruits
potatoes

Greenleeves · 27/03/2007 21:25

From what I've heard chicken/meat do taste nicer organic - but more importantly you are less likely to be buying something pumped full of crap/hormones/water, and you'll have the comfort of knowing you're eating something which probably hasn't been subjected to a lifetime of pain, terror and misery before being slaughtered.

hairymclary · 27/03/2007 21:26

we get abel and cole box and it's cheaper than buying from the supermarket

Spidermama · 27/03/2007 21:28

Riverford. Really great veg and fruit every week. I should really try to get something closer, but I just love Riverford.

greenday · 27/03/2007 21:29

I've been buying my fruit and veg from Riverford too. They're fab.
I made spag bol last night with the veg (with DD in mind, so lots of veg but blended down to a sauce) and it was absolutely delicious. Definitely nothing to do with my cooking skills, I reckon it must have been the veg.

zippitippitoes · 27/03/2007 21:29

in my own taste tests then your average standard supermarket chicken tastes a lot better than your average supermarket organic chicken...the fat content i suspect

but additive wise and hopefully welfare of chicken organic should be superior

chocolateface · 27/03/2007 21:30

Dairy,
Veg, carrots do taste better,
Meat.
Also, organic egg yolks do tend to look brighter.

Hillary · 27/03/2007 21:30

we only eat organic and its much better than non organic, veg actually tastes like veg not the tastless carboard you would normally get.

Organic White bread is pointless though as it has everything taken out anyway.

I'd recommend you buy organic root veg as they soak up the chemicals in the soil.

But then the above ground are sprayed so its up to you, You can buy frozen organic veg in supermarkets now (I think Tesco's is the cheapest) much easier, you throw much less away and its got more nutrients in as its frozen straight away) you can also buy organic chips frozen too!

Hillary · 27/03/2007 21:30

Oh organic milk also has more Omega 3 in too.

KathyMCMLXXII · 27/03/2007 21:32

meat
fish
vegetables

Or if you need it to be more specific,
chicken
pork incl. bacon, ham & sausages
(lamb and beef are less important in the UK because there is less difference between how they live and what they eat, ie non-organic still mostly live outside and mostly eat grass)
salad veg (as they're most likely to be grown hydroponically and for texture rather than flavour if non-organic)

jofeb04 · 27/03/2007 21:35

Thanks for all that.

Riverford don't come by me, but they do go near my dp! Just going to look now

Hillary, thanks for letting me know about the frozen organic veg, that's even better for us again (less waste, less money being spent on veg, more money for other organic things!).

thanks

veg. Made a soup the other days with veg bought at the local farmer's market. It was delicious
meat/pultry
fruit (though I prefer to buy English apple rather than organic ones coming from distant countries)

franca70 · 27/03/2007 21:36

poultry even

Hillary · 27/03/2007 21:36

Youre welcome

I couldnt believe it when I found it frozen! it really does make a difference(and you dont have to wash it)

Callmemadam · 27/03/2007 21:43

Greenday and Spidermama - is it really worth having it delivered (I'm in Kent) and I do use local farm shops a lot, although the quality is variable and rarely organic. I'm interested to hear whether you would recommend Riverford.

greenday · 27/03/2007 21:58

I definitely would recommend Riverford. It doesn't cost more than if you would buy them from the shops/supermarkets. Their stuff are packed nicely (those that require packing).
I like their principles (then again, I'm quite a sucker for nice brochures that seem sincere and personalised) and their concept of recycling the boxes. They don't freight any of their products too.
Although I've only ever tried Riverford and not other veg box schemes, I would say that their website is user-friendly and pleasant.

Spidermama · 27/03/2007 22:03

I would also recommend R'ford. I get a big box of fruit and one of veg every week, plus a few extras, and I base our weekly meals on it. (There are six of us). I very rarely need to buy any other veg from the supermarket and I like the limitations which restrict me to cooking certain things (which we should be eating after all as they're in season.

My only slight worry is that Devon's a long way from Brighton and there's the issue of food miles BUT I tried one local servive and they weren't nearly as good.

Riverford carrots are to die for. I never knew it was possible to enjoy carrots so much until I tasted theres.

FrannyandZooey · 27/03/2007 22:05

My god, yes it does taste better

POTATOEY potatoes

CARROTY carrots

please do get them from a farm or box scheme not from the supermarkets, because the supermarket stuff is still being mass produced somehow - it doesn't taste that great
