Searching for a recipe for a "manly" snack

Dh does not follow a healthful diet. He is constantly snacking but complains he is pudgy. Has any of you a idea for a healthful snack that is manly and not girly or old people food. Thanks a lot!

Ah yes, and maybe pork pies, though I suspect he's probably partial to the odd pork pie.

RelaxMax · 21/07/2017 20:23

I have literally no idea what a manly snack is, or what manly food is, or why genitals affect what you should eat.

If you post such a silly question on a site like mumsnet, you can expect some sarcasm.

In the interests of being helpful, I suggest you look at protein bars and protein balls, the marketing for those are geared towards men so may appeal to him.

Unihorn · 21/07/2017 20:23

This is hilarious already.

IDontWantaHumanSkull · 21/07/2017 20:26

This is the funniest thing I've read in ages. Does your dh really only eat food he considers suitably manly? What about things like ham? That's meaty and manly but it's also pink so it may make him start ovulating.

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/07/2017 20:28

I get you OP, I won't lie, I find it a bit daft but it's better to start here than to give him a bowl of quinoa and mung beans if he'll ignore that and eat a sausage roll.
Anyway, what about plain tortillas with salsa, jerky/biltong, mini cheeses, crackers with peanut butter.
None of these are paticularly low calorie as such but so long as the portions aren't huge they are quite filling.

annandale · 21/07/2017 20:33

I'd recommend the Fixing Dad website. Dh has already lost 2.5 stone. It's basically low carb. Snacks include coffee with cream, a few nuts, hard boiled eggs, seeds, cube of blue cheese wrapped in Ham etc. Spinach is also a manly dark green, as opposed to the wussy paleness of little gem.

However, he can't expect to eat constantly and still lose weight. I'd suggest he takes up crochet to keep his hands busy.

TheSpottedZebra · 21/07/2017 20:39

Hard boiled eggs good idea.
Not soft boiled eggs though - they're for wimps.

Caenea · 21/07/2017 20:39

How hilariously fragile does one's masculinity have to be for your food to be "manly."

Tell him to get a fucking grip on himself and either diet or shut up about being "pudgy"

flickerty · 21/07/2017 20:48

My DH is manly and big and strong and grrrr.

His favourite snack is coconut yoghurt, fresh berries, granola and honey.

Super girly snack but yum and gives him plenty of energy as he has a v sporty job. No dairy in it though, which is better.

For a savoury snack he will have toasted sandwich with avocado, sliced chicken, chilli flakes. Avocado instead of butter/mayo.

Nuts for a quick snack. Fruits.

What are his main meals like? If it's lasagne, chilli, chicken wings etc I'm not surprised he will need to lose a bit of weight (especially if he isn't very active, I'm not sure if you said this or no?)

For dinner we will have fish/white meat + plenty of veg. Or quinoa burgers (surprisingly lovely and filling) with large salad. Something like that.

What does he drink through the day? Is it mainly water or does he drink sugary juices?

I think it's more complex than finding snacks for him - if he's overweight he shouldn't be having many snacks

I'll ignore the piss takers - dh eats almonds, rice cakes and peanut butter (the no sugar stuff) and chicken fajitas (makes his own guacamole and salsa to go in it), olives, He needs calories since he has a physical job.

See, I think some of you are not being very nice. English is not my native language. Maybe I should have asked for "a food typically enjoyed by a young man" as that was what I ment to say.
Typically he likes the things which are not to healthful such as crisps, chocolate, chicken wings, sodas and so on.

So thanks to those of you, who suggested foods. Rice cakes sounds great, homemade guacamole too.

I know he should not snack a lot, but he has a lot of stress, holds a stressful job + he has mental health issues and he is doing very well and being very brave and I want to help a bit. I think he has too much on his plate and cannot stop snacking and eating too much now. So I want to help ho. Explore more healthy options.

BTW he works out.

This is awesome! Wondering what gender my wine is?

Unihorn · 21/07/2017 21:11

I eat chocolate and crisps and fucking hates fruit, vegetables and salad. If never heard of quinoa til about a year ago. Very much a woman though last time I checked.

I honestly had no idea people assigned food genders, in any culture or language.

SoftSheen · 21/07/2017 21:13

Fresh chillies? Manly, low fat, high Vit C.

isthistoonosy · 21/07/2017 21:20

I assumed by manly you ment savory so mine and my husbands are

Plain microwave popcorn
Cooked/ dried sated meats
Taco chops and taco sauce
Peperami. Etc
Small amounts of strong cheese

Switch away from liqued caloried like coke, beer, sugar in coffee etc

Snafu1988 · 21/07/2017 22:17

Savory. Yes. Thanks for the word!

OP posts:
RelaxMax · 22/07/2017 07:54

There honestly is no food typically enjoyed by young men which is not also typically enjoyed by young women, old women, old men, middle aged transgender non-binary people or whoever.

BicBac · 22/07/2017 08:00

"I think he has too much on his plate and cannot stop snacking"

lol

OccasionalNachos · 22/07/2017 08:10

I still can't equate savoury with manly

AlternativeTentacle · 22/07/2017 08:14

Semen is savoury/salty. I rest my case.

Terfing · 24/07/2017 23:03

Pot Noodle and a builder's tea?

squishysquirmy · 25/07/2017 12:01

If he is looking for a food which tastes as good as his favourite unhealthy snacks, which he can eat loads of without putting on weight, then I am sorry but that food doesn't exist. You say he doesn't like apples, etc. Fine, but that's got nothing to do with manliness or femininity. If he wants to improve his health and lose weight, he will have to learn to like snacking on fruit and veg, and miss out the calorific, unhealthy snacks. He could also reduce the portion size of the chill, lasagne etc he eats (and try to bulk these meals out with extra veg). There are a lot of high protein snacks marketed to men like him, and these are fine to a point but really, very few people need excessively high levels of protein. Protein snacks contain calories too, and if he is consuming more than he burns off he will get fat.

Pitta pizzas! Wholewheat pitta, spread some pesto on, slices of tomato and some mozzarella or other cheese. Toast in the oven until melty and toasty. Cut into 1/4ths.
