Cheese Strings

My children (5 & 8) love proper cheese but feel deprived as I wont buy cheese strings. They've been given them at friends houses and see friends eating them for pack lunch/snacks etc. I tell them 'they're not proper cheese' but it seems from the adverts they are (?) What do others think? They look awful

Processed crap.

What's wrong with "real" cheese?

I won't waste my money on them.

Furball · 23/03/2007 07:19

better off with babybels though I don't buy those either not strong enough.

schneebly · 23/03/2007 07:20

they may be cheese but they are horribly overprocessed - better of sticking to your guns! and trillium is right - they are really expensive!

DimpledThighs · 23/03/2007 07:24

I am like you - I can see the "it's just cheese" argument but it seems so wrong.

I don't like playing with food and all that handling and pulling off strips puts me right off. cheese is cheese, string is string and never shall they be combined.

what's next? sardine elastic?

Celery · 23/03/2007 07:29

It may be real cheese, but it's very salty cheese. Adult RDA is 2.4g of salt. There is 0.41g of salt per cheese string.

trillium · 23/03/2007 07:36

What puts me off Babybel is the excessive wrapping......... a nice little red waxed jacket and it still needs a plastic wrapper?

Oh,... what also puts me off is the processed, waxy, plasticky taste and the exorbitant price . Buy a lump of Edam instead.

Laura032004 · 23/03/2007 07:42

How do the organic cheese portions compare for price? I've seen them in M&S and Tesco. They have an individual wrapper like a normal piece of cheese does, but at least not wax and plastic. They're finger chunk size if that makes sense. Real cheese if nothing else! They come in a little net bag of 5 or so.

Thank you everyone, i've been away, hence the dealy in reading the replies. I can now stick to my guns and explain that they are overprocessed.

impledthighs - now I WANT some sardine elastic... and maybe some banana wool...

Spidermama · 27/03/2007 21:59

I think they're crap. I bought them once for my kids just because I don't like total bans on things (forbidden fruit syndrome etc). When I showed them to my kids they jumped around the room punching the air and going, 'Yes! Yes! Other people have those'.

WelshBoris · 27/03/2007 22:01

"Other people"

DD points at fruitshoots in the supermarket and reels off a list of her friends, cousins and people she has seen on the street who drink them.

I hurry along and mutter something about organic, fresh spring water straight from the loins of Jesus

pointydog · 27/03/2007 22:12

Why not get them cheese strings for birthdays and Christmas?

Cheap and they will love you for a whole week at least.

WelshBoris · 27/03/2007 22:13

That's a good idea, never mind books or jigsaws I'll buy her a cheese string.

ELC will go out of business!
