Might be similar to making Rice pudding.

my husband always talks about something he had at his gran's which was pasta cooked in sugary milk. sounds kind of horrid but maybe like bread and milk (which I loved!) and i found this on an obscure website:
Macaroni Pudding
Ingredients
Serving: 4

  • 1 Litre ( 1 3/4 pint ) full cream milk
  • 1/2 packet of custard powder
  • 8 sugar cubes
  • macaroni (broken into pieces roughly 3cm long)

To Prepare
Put the milk, sugar and macaroni into a pan and bring to the boil, stirring regularly. Keep on the boil for 10 minutes without the lid. Stir regularly. Thicken with the custard powder. Serve hot with brown sugar if preferred.

let us know what it tastes like!

Here's a Mrs Beaton recipe.

1.1lt (2 pints) Milk
65g (2½oz) Macaroni
3 Eggs
2 tbsp Brandy.
½ Lemon, rind only
Sugar and Grated Nutmeg, to taste

Put the macaroni into a saucepan, with 600ml (1 pint) of milk, the lemon peel and let it simmer gently until the macaroni is tender.
Put into a pie dish without the peel.
Mix the remaining milk with the eggs stirring well.
Add the sugar and brandy and pour the mixture over the macaroni.
Grate a little nutmeg over the top.
Bake in a moderate oven for 30 minutes.
To make this pudding look nice, a paste should be laid round the edges of the dish and for variety, a layer of preserve or marmalade may be placed on the macaroni, in this case omit the brandy.

Time: 45 minutes to simmer the macaroni. 30 minutes to bake the pudding.
Sufficient for 5 or 6 persons.
Seasonable at any time.

Yes, it sounds vile. I can't say I'm too fussed for any milky pudding other than custard.

Never heard of sweet macaroni but my gran makes something called a noodle kugel which is egg noodles mixed with eggs, butter, raisins and cinnamon and then baked until the outside is all kind of crispy. I have actually got a recipe somewhere if you're interested.

Having flashbacks to school dinners
Macaroni pudding. Don't go there.
Tapioca pudding. Frogspawn.
Spam in batter. Eurgh bring on the turkey twizzlers.

But rice pudding with jam was divine. Stir in the jam, make purple rice pudding.

wurly..... we used to have this when I was young and we called it 'pipes'. Have never found anyone else that has known what I am talking about ! ! Very excited !

All you do is cook macaroni and serve it with milk and a sprinkling of sugar .

It's really yummy - well I used to think so

ska · 24/03/2007 18:27

yes please can i have the recipe for noodle krugel - i read about it in a polish/american novel and always wanted to try it!
and the macaroni recipe does sound very comforting - i do love rice pudding (I stir in my own home made marmalade which is fab)

Actually, it's not much of a recipe, I'm afraid! Jewish cooking tends to be a bit like that - very much just throw a little of this and a little of that in. This is grandma's though:

-Boil 1 bag of medium egg noodles in salted water and drain
-Mix 1 egg, marg, salt & sugar to taste, raisins
-Bake 160 C for about 45 min or until brown on top

I've looked up lots of recipes on line - I would try maybe 1/2 - 3/4 cup sugar and about 1 cup raisins. Most recipes also tend to use more than 1 egg but it's really only there to bind everything together. It's one of those recipes that you can really make to suit your own taste. Some people put cream in, some people add cinnamon but personally I like it just the way grandma makes it.

Oh - also I would put it in a deep dish to bake it not a shallow one.

thanks, will try it!
