oily fish recipes

Following on from a recent thread about what to do with tinned salmon - anyone got any good recipes (appealing to children AND grown ups) using all types of oily fish ie - sardines, mackeral, tuna, salmon etc. I usually just do them with salad, any great ideas out there? Fishcakes or pasta recipes, maybe?

Anyone use fish oil supplements for their children? Any good?

In typical latest health advice fashion - we're told to eat these things on the one hand, but hold back on the other in case of contamination. It's hard to know what to do for the best!

Thanks everyone.

I just was reading old threads on fish oils . How do U get bones out of oily fish?, I need 2 know.

Buy it deboned. You can for salmon and mackerel.

One of my favourite fishy foods to make with the kids is smoked mackerel pate. Now, smoked mackerel has less oil in it than fresh mackerel so if you want maximum mackerel oil, then buy it non-smoked and grill it (delicious).

Otherwise, buy smoked mackerel fillet (normally deskinned and deboned) around 2-3 of them - shove in food blender with juice of one lemon and half a pot of creme fraiche (or more if kids want it smoother). Serve it to kids in little bowls with some toast and get them to spread it on. Mine absolutely love it!

not necessarily very kid friendly but smoked mackerel makes a fantastic salad with spinach, bacon, avocado and blue cheese - surprisingly all the strong flavours work really well together.

It also makes the easiest pate in the world, mixed up with some cream cheese, a bit of lemon juice and the secret, crucial ingredient.. horseradish.

ds (12m) likes a superquick fishypie made with tuna, mixed with some creamy mashed potato and a little cheese then blitzed for a few seconds in the micro.

I like smoked mackerel with rice, broccoli and toasted sesame seeds when I'm feeling like I've over indulged and want easy comfort food but need to feel a bit healthy too .

Thanks everyone - feeling inspired now (and hungry). That's a good site you've linked to treacletart, I didn't think to look online.

But remember - tinned tuna doesn't count as oily fish for omega 3 because the canning process takes it out, apparantly. (but how come not from other tinned fish??).

I'm no expert but it's something to do with the fact that the tuna is cooked before it's canned and the cooking is done in such a way that the oil separates from the fish (thus removing the omega3 oils). With the other fish, this separation doesn't happen.
