Hey I cannot give any of mine wholemeal bread, it goes straight through them and they loose weight. So its the good old starchy cheap white bread here which makes great toast

hoxtonchick · 20/03/2007 20:11

i think it can fill them up too much whilst not containing very many calories. something like museli belt malnutrition?!

"High-fibre foods

A high fibre diet is not suitable for babies or young children. Occasional use of wholemeal bread, pasta and grains is fine, but too many of them could fill up your child's tummy, not allowing room for other foods. Do not add bran to your baby's food since it prevents some important minerals from being absorbed. Do offer your child a variety of different starchy foods, including wholegrain varieties, but don't use wholegrain foods exclusively until your child is five years old. "

i thought so

ds has bread quite a bit - toast at breakfast and sarnies at least 4 times a week for lunch

so - unbleached white, then?

i think it's wholemeal pasta that babycentre objects to... you're not telling me that as a lover of Ice Magic you eat brown pasta, are you?

BizzyDint · 20/03/2007 20:23

it's about variety surely? i'd rather dd have wholemeal than white. she only has 2 slices a day at most. pasta is white pasta, maybe twice a week. she also has wholemeal pittas, white tortillas and white hot cross buns. she also eats lots of fruit and veg, so she is obviously not filling up on bread rather than the other good stuff.

Tutter · 20/03/2007 20:25

no, of course not

takes too damned long to cook

I heard the wholemeal not-so-good for babies/toddlers thing somewhere a few months ago after I had embarked on a wholemeal diet for my lo in an attempt to be ever so healthy. I have since introduced alot of normal pasta and white bread into his diet. May or may not have made a difference internally, but tbh his bowel movements seem the same to me!

3andnomore · 20/03/2007 20:26

Just another thought, white bread always gets such bad press, but it is actually richer in calcium....
in our house we sometimes have brown, sometimes wholemeal(and yes, what is the difference, lol) and sometimes white bread (especially when dh is here, as he loves Bloomers, lol)...Pasta, if I eat with them then it's wholemeal pasta, and if I cook only them pasta it's white...and so on!

\lunk{http://www.nutriciababy.co.nz/main/ask/what_type_of_bread_do_i_feed_my_.html\more here}

What type of bread do I feed my baby?

Q: What type of bread is suitable for my 10 month old?

A: Up until about 15 months, use a white bread. Some brown breads can be too rough on their digestive systems, and the fibre intake should not be increased too much. Too much fibre can lead to a reduced food intake and therefore affect growth. After 15 months, you can introduce a fine wholemeal bread but avoid 'grainy' or 'nutty' breads.
