Divine chocolate is now widely available, both milk and plain. It's fair trade, and the dark has a high percentage (over 70 per cent of cocoa solids). It's what I always buy.

Can I recommend this book I have been loaned? (I'm doing my dissertation on Slavery):

disposable people- new slavery in the global economy, by kevin bales, university of california press (ISBN 0-520 22463 -9)

And perhaps go here and sign the petitions / send the letter to your MPs (it takes 5 minutes, all mine replied)

11 - 12 million people MINIMUM were stolen from Africa during the transatlantic slave trade. Its a terrible, terrible truth.

29 million MINIMUM people are being held in slavery now. In 2007. Many as prostitutes or bonded slaves, some by companies we use every day.

It has to stop.

TooTicky · 21/03/2007 21:50

That is awful. Why is it kept so quiet?

OP posts:
PeachyClair · 21/03/2007 21:52

I suppose because of the people involved- governments, huge conglomerates, the power holders. And slavery is different these days- its about peple in North Thailand selling their children for prostitution / factory enslavery, or bonded slaves, or Christians in APkistan (brick industry)

Because the slave markets don't exist (its often run by brokers) it escapes the public perception- but its there and thriving

There's examples in the book of here poor people used to sell their daughters to pay for mortgages that would default and see them starve, they now sell them for a new TV or a rice cooker.

FFS.

As the human race, we have so very very far to go

I'm a bit speechless, hence the overuse of emoticons.

I know. I ahd a lecture on slavery the day after (Ethic class) and I got really angry!.

The only people who can stop this is the Governemnts, so signing the letters on the website I linked to is a goosd start. And raising our kids to realise the value of everyone.

PeachyClair · 21/03/2007 22:06

I don't have to return book for a while- feel free to cat if you want to read it first

TooTicky · 21/03/2007 22:06

Absolutely. And telling people. Of course, you get a bit of a reputation.... (vegan, organic, wears rainbow stripy things, fair trade, animal rights... oh and politics too)
My dd1 is on the case though - keep thinking she will end up working for Amnesty International or something.

Oh, yes please. I am a fast reader, children and housework allowing.
I can't do CATs though - I'm at [email protected]

OP posts:
PeachyClair · 21/03/2007 22:14

I will email.

I'm doing a degree in religions and philosophy so i can train to teach RE- i think teaching (educating in might be better) tolerance and understanding and human ethics is so important.
