So where do you get your nice ham?

I want nice ham that doesn't just taste nice, but is made from pigs who have had their 5-a-day and bedtime stories.

Sainsburys don't seem to do any, there wasn't any at our farmers' market on Sat (even though there was lots of happy-pig bacon), we are too far Oop North to have Ocado or Waitrose....

Any recommendations? is there a niceham.co.uk I can order it from?

Thanks

gtesco deli does v nice ham - quite expensive, it's about £3 for just a handful of slices
do you have a local butchers at all?

KathyMCMLXXII · 19/03/2007 13:03

We have an excellent butcher but they don't sell outdoor reared pig. And there were many at the farmers market but none of them did ham.
I suppose I should have said 'nice kind ham' as it's the 'kind' that seems to be the problem.

Troutpout · 19/03/2007 13:19

Think m and s might do happy ham

thehairybabysmum · 19/03/2007 13:20

M&S...they do organic ham which would fit your criteria.

Could you buy a piece of ham and cook it yourself...if the co.s at your farmers market do bacon then they will also do joints of ham or gammon...dead easy to do and tastes so much better than pre-sliced.

Where are you...ive bought form this co. at York farmers market and the ham was lovvely

ham online

Mines in the paddock next door, my new pigs have arrived but they won't be nice ham until the autumn.

KathyMCMLXXII · 19/03/2007 13:21

Good idea Troutpout - will try next time I'm in town. Thanks.

Are you near a Booths if you are Oop North Kathy? GDG and JoolsTwo rate Booths very highly as a good small chain which sells local produce eg ham.
There's that guy in Waberthwaite, Southern Cumbria - Richard Woodall? - who sells smashing ham and bacon and does mail order too I believe.

MrsGumby · 19/03/2007 13:25

Buy all my meat in bulk from local farm shop - I bag it all up and freeze it and it saves me a fortune. Roasted a ham for the first time a couple of weeks ago and it was to die for...I'll never ever buy slimy, fluorescent pink supermarket ham again!

KathyMCMLXXII · 19/03/2007 13:27

Hairybabysmum - thanks for link. We are in York! I have seen them at the York food festival I think but never noticed them at Murton - from their website it looks like they do the city centre market on 29th but not the fortnightly Murton one which is where we go.
Also good idea to buy a joint and slice it - hadn't thought of that (duh!).

Megalegs, am v . Hope you will do regular updates on MN - I want to hear all about it.

No Booths near us (though we like it when we go to the Lake District).

Am going to roast and freeze a ham as suggested - that's such a good idea.

Thanks all.

MrsBadger · 19/03/2007 13:32

we buy big hams and poach them (stays moister than roasting and less hassle)

paulaplumpbottom · 19/03/2007 13:33

Marks & Spencers Organic breaded Gammon is very nice.

The Duchy Original brand is also good, I prefer the orange Marmalade one.

castlesintheair · 19/03/2007 13:34

You can get all your organic meat from here eversfield manor Can't recommend it enough.

Twinkie1 · 19/03/2007 13:34

We don't have Ham - DS has christened it Pam!!

DD now asks if she has a nice Pam Sandwich in her lunchbox to weird stares from other playground mums!

KathyMCMLXXII · 19/03/2007 13:42

(Am reading Castle's link now... mmmm, nice ham.....)

Try Dukeshillham dot co dot uk

Delicious and they deliver - I think they mostly do bigger ones that last for weeks. Well not in our house anyway!

thehairybabysmum · 19/03/2007 14:01

Im the wrong side of town for Murton so tend to just do the city centre one...have you tried the deli in the market (henshelwoods i think) they might do it??

Which buthchers do you go to?? We use the one in woodthorpe whose name escapes me now, i think they have some free range pork.

richardsons...it just came back to me then...v. good (plus one of the guys v. good looking!!!)

CODalmighty · 19/03/2007 14:52

idohtink purveryors of nice ham need to go on mumsnet ocal

MegaLegs · 19/03/2007 14:54

Will keep you posted Kathy - we have 4 Berkshire weaners living the life of Riley in the land next to our house. They have fruit trees and a pond. Their favourite pastime is playing football. They are definately happy pigs.

KathyMCMLXXII · 19/03/2007 16:07

Hairy (if I may call you that), we sometimes go to Scotts in town. We're actually out in a village near Pocklington which also has a couple of good butchers.
Our bacon is Burtons of Wilberfoss - I systematically tried three different sorts at the food festival last year and Burtons was the best by a mile

I'm not that crazy about Henshelwoods to be honest - sometimes buy their olives etc but they never seem to justify the price.

Megalegs - @ your footballing happy pigs.

In nice-hams-certified-organic-by-jamie-oliver-and -given-a-good-life-in-pretty-flower-filed-meadows-with-nice-views-and-mineral-water R Us.

OK, Tesco.

No delis here that I have ever discovered

KathyMCMLXXII · 19/03/2007 16:18

Oh yes I'd forgotten the importance of the flower-filled meadow, Peachy

I wonder if Megalegs' piggies have flowers to frolic in.

MegaLegs · 19/03/2007 17:16
