Lasagne sheet alternative

BusyBee2017 · 04/06/2017 18:26

I love lasagne but my family don't because they don't like pasta and the pasta consistency when cooked.

I was wondering what alternatives there were rather than using lasagne sheets.

Have you tried it and was consistency okay?

Rice pasta lasagna sheets, though the consistency is similar. Also sliced aubergine or large squash slices, overlapping, works. Cant recall if you have to part cook the aubergine first.

I think The Hairy Bikers use layers of leeks in their skinny lasagna.

Aubergines and courgettes work ok I give them two mins in micro wave then blot with kitchen roll, then give them a couple of mins each side in the gridle pan. A bit of faff but it's worth it as it makes the lasagne less sloppy.
Sainsbury's do BNS sheets for lasagne

BusyBee2017 · 04/06/2017 18:38

What's bns sheets?

The don't like the end consistency of the lasagne sheets lol that's my folks and brother but my hubby and son like it thank goodness because I don't have the patience for fussy eaters

Potato? I really like aubergine and tomato alternated. Would courgette work?

BusyBee2017 · 04/06/2017 18:42

I heard courgettes get sloppy ... but will try dabbing it like a pp suggested.

Potatoes are a good idea-thinly slices like dauphinois without the cream - good suggestion

You can make something which isn't lasagne but along similar lines with tortillas:

You can probably use crepes, I make a thing like cannelloni with crepes instead of pasta

AtleastitsnotMonday · 04/06/2017 19:05

BNS is butternut squash sheets they are in the fresh veg section.

lazycrazyhazy · 04/06/2017 22:27

For a less carby similar dish I layer the sauce between layers of raw spinach. Otherwise proceed as normal lasagne, oven bake etc. Remember spinach shrinks a lot so use plenty.

aneres · 04/06/2017 22:31

I use thinly sliced potatoes but I spray them with frylight first then bake in the oven so they have some colour and are cooked through.

originalbiglymavis · 04/06/2017 22:34

Butternut squash is yukky!

Butternut squash is yukky!

Not true! I make lasagne with thinly sliced butternut squash instead of pasta as I'm gluten-free - it is delicious.

originalbiglymavis · 04/06/2017 22:38

As soup its my favourite but I do love pasta.

shesnotme · 04/06/2017 22:39

You can buy butternut squash sheets in tesco

PurpleDaisies · 04/06/2017 22:41

Crepes are delicious filled with bolognaise sauce, topped with cheese sauce and mozzarella then baked. Not quite lasagne but similar.

Hulder · 04/06/2017 22:42

You can use crepes - it's called crespelle. Personally I don't like it as much as lasagne as it's a faff to do and not as nice to eat.

banoooona · 04/06/2017 22:44

I did a lasagna with quite chunky (maybe a cm thick...?) raw sheets of aubergine the other day and it was delicious. Cooked it long and slow and low. Will definitely cook again.

BusyBee2017 · 04/06/2017 22:57

Thank you everybody

I made lasagne this evening for my DH, DS and me it was lovely.

It had onions, aubergines, courgettes, celery, carrots & tomatoes in there ... plus I made my own white sauce because we didn't have a jar and it was such a lovely lasagne. I will defo be making my own white sauce much better then the jars.

Banoona that sounds like (Melanzane alla Parmigiana)
One of Italy's great dishes. I love it and so do DC but DH won't eat aubergines unless very well disguised hence I use the spinach. You've made me feel hungry!
