i gave mine porridge IIRC.....

PinkTulips · 17/03/2007 16:53

as long as there are no allergies in the family oats are no problem from 6 months.

i used to give dd lots of fruit and yogurt for breakfast iirc and ds gets anything from gluten free pancakes to cornflakes (the joys of BLW!)

bizzykid · 17/03/2007 17:05

Do you get gluten free bread from 6 months or only if there are allergies in family

bizzy , unless you have reason to believe that a child will be gluten intolerant, they can have normal bread.....

bizzykid · 17/03/2007 17:10

god bet i sound so neurotic, just trying to get my head clear on what to give for the next stage althought sometimes i think we do worry too much and should just go with it

just give what you are having, without salt !

can have fish, meat, chicken, cheese, bread, fruit & veg, pasta, beans, pretty much anything...

PinkTulips · 17/03/2007 17:19

dd who's 2 is being investigated for coeliacs and is atopic so ds is gluten free til a year

for most babies you can be far more relaxed don't worry... and there's no harm in being a little neurotic about this stuff... i only wish i'd been more neurotic about dd and we might not havehalf these food allergies

lilymolly · 17/03/2007 17:37

I think a brill breakie is weetabix of ready brek with milk and a half a fruit pura which will naturally sweeten it. DD loves this

indiajane · 17/03/2007 17:42

Does anyone have a recipe for baked beans? I'd love to make my own as the Heinz ones are so salty (and the others taste "funny")
Thanks

Mercy · 17/03/2007 17:54

iirc Whole Earth baked beans are sweetened with apple juice - can't remember re the salt content though. Also Cow&Gate do a salt-free gravy for children, but I haven't seen it for ages.

I would think that a very young child would eat such pretty small amount of beans that the salt content wouldn't really be an issue, assuming the rest of their diet is low in salt too.

But would also be interested in a home-made recipe if anyone has one!

fizzbuzz · 17/03/2007 18:17

Bizykid, there are loads of good recipes on the Cow&Gate website, the Milupa website and The Baby Centre website.

Dd eats better than me!

bizzykid · 17/03/2007 18:34

thanks will look on those websites now

Home Baked Beans 8 oz dried haricot beans 1 lb tomatoes, skinned and deseeded (I use tinned tomatoes and it is ok, but maybe runnier) 2 tbsp tomato puree 2 tbsp molasses 2 tsp mustard powder 3/4 pint hot stock Soak beans overnight in a large bowl covered with cold water. Drain well, put in saucepan and cover with cold water by at least 2 inches. Bring to the boil. Skin surface, cover pan and cook at rolling boil for 30 mins. Drain well. Preheat oven to GM 2 (sorry forgotten what that converts to). Put beans in a large casserole dish and stir in tomatoes. Mix together tomato puree, molasses, mustard and stock. Pour over beans and mix well. Cover casserole and cook for 2.5 hours (I find takes longer for them to get really tender but could be my oven). Stir gently and cook for another 30 mins or until sauce has thickened. I freeze them in small portions for ds as I think the shop bought ones are really salty and usually have sugar or sweeteners in them. These have a less artificial taste so you may prefer them.

I can vouch for them!

indiajane · 18/03/2007 15:00

Thanks I will make them this week .... can a 6.5 month old eat them or will he choke do you think...?

Winestein · 18/03/2007 21:20

I'm not sure how a 6.5 month old would react to mustard - although it's not like just giving them a teaspoon of it, admittedly! You'd have to be careful on the salt content of your stock, but if you were worried about choking, you could just mash them I suppose. The only thing that took a bit of getting used to with them is they have a bit of a husk on them, as opposed to the processed softened ones in cans. Depends on what said 6.5 month old is used to eating so far I suppose!

OOOh, a belated thank you Winestein
