How do you cook a squash and make it taste nice?

Had one of those greenish ones in our veg box a couple of weeks ago, steamed it for ds, tasted it and it was awful! So bitter.
Have got another one this week so I thought I'd try again, anyone got any ideas?

i roast them with orange juice or drizzel with honey once they're over 1

Ali5 · 16/03/2007 10:27

Do you peel it first? How small do you cut it and how long do you roast it?

Peel it, cut it in pieces about ice-cube size, roast with butter, sprinkle with cinnamon & nutmeg.

If you are ina hurry you can just slice in half and roast then scoop out inards and mash when they are done

Either way you are aiming for about the consistency where you can break down with a fork. about same roasting time as for roast potatoes.

Thanks for the information you guys. Think the squash we get is just not edible! I tried half with the spices on, half with the orange juice and it still ended up tasting really bitter (apart from the edges that had the flavouring on). Maybe I'm just not a squash person.

Maybe it hadnt ripened.

I am sure they are orangey on the outside.

Next time turn it into soup! Delish.

KathyMCMLXXII · 20/03/2007 10:23

They take ages to peel so I always roast it unpeeled in wedges or halves.
It should certainly not taste bitter.

princesscc · 20/03/2007 10:33

turn it into curry with lots of other root veg

Ali5 · 20/03/2007 10:41

Will try soup. DH doesn't like squashy things so will try curry when ds is a bit older and he can share it with me.
Speaking of which, when is good age to introduce things like mild chilli and curry (to ds, not dh!)?

Never peel it. Cube it. Put in roasting tin. Add pack of bacon and generous handful cashew nuts. Splosh of oil. 1 teaspoon tumeric. 1 teaspoon coriander.
Yummy. (As per Jamie's advert for sainsbury's.) Has become a firm favourite here. Feeds two 'til they're stuffed.

dizzydo · 20/03/2007 14:45

ooh would be so great not to peel, doesnt it spoil the taste/texture?

yomellamoHelly · 20/03/2007 16:52

Dizzydo - Have tried peeling and not peeling and couldn't really tell much difference. Peeled squash is mushier. Personally I prefer unpeeled. Takes slightly longer to cook.

do you mean butternut squash?

milkbeard · 20/03/2007 18:39

boil it up with parsnip til tender then mash. or boil it then for last five mins add pear then mash once cooked. sounds gross but my daughter loves it!

SecondhandRose · 20/03/2007 18:51

For a butternut squash give it a wash and stick it whole in the oven for an hour at 200 degrees. The skin then peels off. mmmmm

Swizzler · 20/03/2007 18:52

Or chop it and roast it - skin then peel from the chunks. Def roast not boil.

themaskedposter · 20/03/2007 18:53

Ooooo - yes, roast it

fantabulous!

Ali5 · 20/03/2007 20:22

Not butternut squash, both me and ds love that cooked in a variety of ways. This creature is a green thing with orange-ish stripes.

I cut it in half and roast it. it caramelises and tastes lovely and sweet. It's pointless boiled.
