Good Chinese cookbook

Can anyone recommend a good and easy one?

Have recently moved to Singapore and want to try and cook more varied Chinese dishes with local ingredients, especially prawns and fish.

I have a basic Ken Hom one but too many of the recipes are spicy and DS and DD just won't eat anything with a hint of chilli in it.

Thanks

cook?
cook?
you are in Singapore, land of restaurants and hawkers and food stalls.

Just leave the chilis out or get some sweet chili sauce and introduce it gradually

IMO Yan Kit So is the best cookery writer.

Or is there a recipe column in the Straits Times?

We used to live in Singapore and although eating out is great as Ms Wong says, we had a lot of fun cooking too.

Our favourite book was (still is) Charmaine Solomon's The Complete Asian Cookbook. Recommended by a Sri Lankan friend and it is fab.

It has not just Chinese food, but also Malaysian, Indonesian, Nonya etc so all the food you'll find in Singapore. There's lots of spicy-but-not-hot food eg nasi goreng which you could use as a gentle intor to local food before getting them to eat chilli crab!

intor=intro sorry!

I must get hold of a copy, thanks for reminding me

Thanks - will look out for both Yan Kit So and Charmaine Solomon.

Suzy - eating out on weekdays takes too long with the kids and I'm always in such a rush trying to get them to bed. The fish and prawns in the market look really good too so I thought while I have easy access to the ingredients, I should try and cook a bit more.

Don't read the Straits Times - local newspapers leave a lot to be desired....

We LIVED on prawns...

Frozen prawns in NZ don't quite hack it unfortunately

Have made a note of Yan Kit So, thanks in return Suzy!

Welliemum - maybe you could share some of your easy prawn recipes?

We'd like to have a BBQ some time and I thought some prawns and fish on the barbie would be a nice change to sausages, and I'm still tryng to get over the price of fresh lamb and beef here!
