You know when you open a packet of bacon but don't eat all of it?

Well I thought it was ok in the fridge for a few days.

I opened a packet on sunday and today its is a different colour in parts. Not pink all over. Is that ok to eat??
I have sometimes seen it like that in the shop in an unopened packet. I usually just pick another packet.

Would you eat it?

smell it, if it smells odd then don't eat it.

That's what I do [slattern]

Ok, off to sniff now.....

It doesn't really smell of anything!

that's good.

If it is really dry and oddly textured on the coloured bits, I wouldn't eat it. But if it's only slightly discoloured and the texture is still reasonably moist, then I'd cook it and see.

NomDePlume · 13/03/2007 12:22

lol essbee, maybe I'm not the best one to ask

KathyMCMLXXII · 13/03/2007 12:23

Make sure you let it come to room temperature before you draw any conclusions from lack of smell - when I had the green chicken the other week I found it didn't smell at first but stank to high heaven when it'd had a chance to warm up

princessmel · 13/03/2007 12:25

OMG!!! Its for my son aswell. Maybe I shouldn't give it to him. He can have cheese instead.

Its still squishy and moist. Just changed colour a bit.

If I eat it whats the worst that could happen? I'd be sick??

Is the change in colour not just what happens to the bacon when the air gets to it? If it doesn't smell, isn't all dried out I would eat it.

Agree with Essbee. Also, I assume you were going to cook it! If you do that thoroughly it should be fine, I would have thought.

MrsSpoon · 13/03/2007 13:39

I second that, definately cook it first!

princessmel · 13/03/2007 13:55

What do you mean cook?? can't you eat it raw?

My MIL is Polish and doesn't see anything wrong with raw bacon.

I used to work at M&S in the food department, and the bacon at the top would often go like this - like a petrol effect IYKWIM. It was because it had been near the lights for too long. We'd rotate it to the bottom, and the colour usually went back to normal. No idea why though.
