Quality convenience food / ready meals for dh whilst I am away

Away with the children for 4 days next week leaving dh solo.

He did, only half jestingly, suggest I cook 4 dinners for him and leave them in the freezer, but I errrm declined robustly....

He hasn't cooked from scratch for a long time, and bless him with the best will in the world after he rolls on home at 21.00 he won't feel inclined to...

So are they any slightly less cardboady inedible convenience meals / ready meals on the market that you can recommend?

I am about to do an online Ocado order...

Funnily enough when dh is away, as he is atm, I have to make a real effort to eat properly. Pot and kettle I guess.

foxinsocks · 08/03/2007 13:55

snort - I love the saying 'wind your neck in'

sunnywong · 08/03/2007 13:57

my mother's 1969 Cordon Bleu Cookery Course partworks - which are SUPERB have a whole chapter on what to leave for your man and teach him to prepare should you be away from the homestead - medical emergencies only.

If I coudl be arsed I'd dig it out and reproduce it, it's a hoot but actually very very practical.

hunkermunker · 08/03/2007 13:57

I agree with both sides equally here.

On the one hand, he is a grown man and ought to be able to fend for himself.

But on the other hand, if you love someone, it's nice to think of their needs a bit.

DH would miss me and the boys if I went away, so it would make me feel thoughtful if I left him food I knew he'd like in the fridge while I was away.

Stop vomiting now, TC

ChippyMinton · 08/03/2007 14:01

LOL at the indignation on this thread

My DH is going to be away the next few days and has already stocked the fridge with ready meals for me, he is a total sweetheart. When i went away it didn't even occur to me to buy him food as he's a great cook, whereas he knows i would eat beans on taost every day left to my own devices.

ComeOVeneer · 08/03/2007 14:10

BUt I don't get it. If you are there you cook and shop for him, why make his life harder whilst you are away, if you have the time to sort it out for him it is common sense, not pandering toa helpless man.

TeeCee · 08/03/2007 14:14

Ohhhhhh Hunker!!!!!!!!!!! And would you leace ickle notes for him to find in the fridge, and under his lavender scented pillow, in the pocket of his tartan pj's, under his special coco mug??!!

hunkermunker · 08/03/2007 14:15

Snort!

No, course not. That would be soft.

ComeOVeneer · 08/03/2007 14:16

Hunker you somehow don't stike me as the coy, eyelash fluttering type of wifey

CODalmighty · 08/03/2007 14:17

he wont eat em
hell get crap or go out

CODalmighty · 08/03/2007 14:17

tc are you pg

TeeCee · 08/03/2007 14:19

Fishface - YES

Hunker - you're more the type to leave readers wives type polaroids under his pillow aren't you love!

motherinferior · 08/03/2007 14:19

Mr Inferior is taking both Inferiorettes away for a week in the summer. If I get him to stock the fridge with home-cooked delicacies as well, I'll truly be in a win-win situation

suedonim · 08/03/2007 15:15

I'm definitely in the Old Bag camp here. I went to India for two weeks and left dh with a 2yo and 11yo. I did generously scrape up some childcare for him before I went.

Then I wafted off to California for another two weeks, leaving dh with the girls, both at school by now. I arranged some childminding before and after school but that's all. Istr I travelled at weekends so just did a normal shop and left that in the fridge/freezer. No one died.

hunkermunker · 08/03/2007 16:15

I don't know what you mean, TC

CoV, I have my moments!

elclose · 08/03/2007 16:43

dont know if this will help but i am totally against ready meals as always make from scratch but went into m& s yesterday and they had these meals called nutriotionally balanced basically totally fresh stuff which just needs reheating , they were on special offer for 1.99 so got a few for mine and dh dinner. (usually £3.99
They were really tasty and i was suprised but would not pay full price we had chicken madras they also had singapore noodles and seafood risotto

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 08/03/2007 16:49

I'm going away for 3 weeks in a few days, not even crossed my mind to sort out any food for hubby

beckybrastraps · 08/03/2007 17:04

Well, my dh is working away this week and made sure the house was well-stocked with wine before he left.

handlemecarefully · 08/03/2007 17:11

But Stripey you are probably off to do something serious like work or summat. Not a holiday (albeit only CenterParcs off season!)
