I have recently started a recipe blog in response to my daughter's allergies. She is dairy, egg, soy, peanut intolerant.

Does anyone have experience of coeliac disease? I would like to include recipes that can help. Please either post here or visit my blog at:

Hi

Have nothing to hand I'm afraid but will watch with interest as we are egg/nut & Gluten allergic/intollerant. Very difficult indeed although there is a brand called Orgran which are free from all these, they sell baking products and biscuits etc. Can be found in some supermarkets and online.

thanks for replying Hillary. I'm trying to find out what you miss the most, and what would be your food wishlist? For exampe, a gluten-free friend of mine loves cake, and I developed a fairy cake recipe for her. I would willingly try for you too! My blog is a recipe blog for those with food intolerances. Let me know!

Multiple allergies are tricky as I know from avoiding gluten, milk and egg for my son - but once you get used to substituting ingredients it is amazing what can be done. After six years of experimenting the only thing I've been unable to produce is a croissant that turns out like a croissant - I might have another go as I've been inspired by your blog piginthekitchen!

There is lots of help re coeliac/glutenfree here: members2.boardhost.com/glutenfree/

and recipes for multiple allergies/intolerances and substitutions here:

mum is coeliac and is sitting here reading the coeliac society mag next to me (cross grain) which has an article about coeliac children in it - might be worth checking out their website.

flamingtoaster · 20/03/2007 10:17

You are right snipersmum - www.coeliac.co.uk/ is excellent for newly diagnosed coeliacs as it gives useful information and links to suppliers (where you can ask for free samples etc.), and they do have recipes in their magazine, but, not surprisingly, it's up to the coeliac who has multiple allergies to come up with their own substitutions!

piginthekitchen - I only tried the croissant because when my son developed his allergies (true allergies, epipen prescribed, etc.) he was devastated that he could never eat all the things he loved ever again. I promised (in a rash moment!) that I would try to make everything he loved in a form he could eat. Croissants are a substitution too far I feel because I was substituting the main three ingredients. The result looked like a croissant, and tasted lovely but I couldn't get that texture! I've finally found out that for millionaire's shortbread you can use tofu instead of condensed milk for the "soft toffee" layer so I plan to try that sometime! It's not something he ever ate - but since he can't have Twix and he used to like those he should enjoy it.

piginthekitchen · 21/03/2007 21:25

Flamingtoaster, you sound like a lovely Mummy! I went to the coeliac forum you recommended, and there is a croissant recipe!!! If you're feeling brave...

piginthekitchen - Thanks for the thought but I tried that recipe and it just didn't come out the right texture for me! I think having to substitute rice milk for the milk doesn't help the texture - I might try it again with soya milk to see if that helps though!
