oh I'm making beef stew as well - mine's on the top at the mo but will transfer to the oven for a couple of hours in a bit

Iota · 07/03/2007 13:44

what are you using? I'm usiong braising steak

funnypeculiar · 07/03/2007 13:45

ha - me too. I normally get it in the oven for 4 hours (30 mins @ 180, rest at 150), but am cutting things a bit fine for dc's tea, so may keep temparature up for a bit!

braising steak, onions, carrots, swede and parsnips at the moment. May put a handful of peas and some chopped potatoes in later (i dont like dumplings). My whole house smells of stew its lovely.

As long as possible on a low heat in the oven.

Iota · 07/03/2007 14:01

braising steak will be fine after a couple of hours - other cuts such as shin take longer

damewashalot · 07/03/2007 14:02

mine's on the top bubbling very gently, will turn it off to do school run then stick it back on when I get back. Braising steak here too

Iota · 07/03/2007 14:03

mine's just gone into the oven on low

wurlywurly · 07/03/2007 14:04

have just shoved it in th oven, we are going to a friend house after school and i dont wanna over cook it so have put it in a really low heat oven.

I did nearly buy shin beef, but stuck with braising steak.

wurlywurly · 07/03/2007 14:18

it just smells so yummy. I dont bother cooking it very often, its only for me and ds2 as dh and ds1 doesnt eat it, but cos i felt like crap I though I would cook it. Cant wait to eat it later.

wurlywurly · 07/03/2007 14:38

angel make a batch and freeze it, I have ended up with loads (shall i put some in the post to you??)

I will be freezing about half of my stew - into individual potions for ds2 who is a gravy-monster.( ds1 only eats 'dry' food)

AnAngelWithin · 07/03/2007 14:41

ooooh wurlywurly yes please

Iota · 07/03/2007 17:07

mmmmmmm stew was delicious , ds2 had seconds.

the only trouble with eating this early with the kids is that I will be ravenous later

wurlywurly · 07/03/2007 18:23

i had 2 big bowls of mine with mashed potatoes and it was scrummy.

I followed the tips from this thread and the beef stew I made at the weekend was absolutely delicious.

When I have attempted to make this before, the meat was rather tough, even after 3 hours in the oven at 180 C. However, this time I cooked it in the oven at 150 C for 3 hours. It was very soft and yummy. DH kept remarking how good it was because previously, he has disliked my previous efforts. Even my 3yo DTS ate it whereas before they would spit out the meat because they had trouble chewing it.

So thank you!

Lazycow · 14/03/2007 11:19

I'm going to try the 150oC as well. The meat in my stews always seems too tough so hopefully this will work

wurlywurly · 14/03/2007 12:36

speedy glad you enjoyed it, stews and casseroles are about the only things i can eat at the moment.
