Is it ok to give semi skimmed milk to DS aged 2.7 instead of full fat?

DS aged 2.7 has just stopped having his milk at night. He no longer wears nappies at night anymore and we found that giving a big beaker of milk just before bed time was just going to cause leaks and accidents! This is going well. However it means that he doesnt have that much milk to drink anymore apart from on cereal in the morning and the odd cup in the day. The full fat milk we have in the house just goes off and I'm always chucking it away. Can I start substituting for semi skimmed whenever he has milk, or should he still have full fat for the calories? Should I be giving him more milk anyway? Help!

he should really stll have full fat. My paed said that she thinks they should still have it until 5 really. Why can't you buy smaller amounts?

Biglips · 06/03/2007 19:30

get a smaller full fat carton...so ya not wasting it

My dd has semi at home and eats a balanced diet. I think he would be fine. The advice is no semi before 2. We too have just dropped night ilk for same reason. HTH

I still give my kids full fat milk and they're older than your ds.

I thought the advice was full fat is best for kids as they need more fat than adults?

semi-skimmed is considered ok from the age of 2 as long as your lo has a good balanced diet. I still give full fat to dd who is 3 but tbh she doesnt actually drink milk much any more.

Thanks for all your replies - am pregnant with no2 and have been too tired to post the last few days! Appreciate all your advice - I think I will get smaller cartons of full fat for DS and see how it goes, obvious really - but hadn't thought of that , silly pregnancy brain!

he can have semi-skimmed. It's fine. Both my kids drink it (they aren't mad keen on any milk though tbh) because we do. It's perfectly OK.

DD is under 5 and if she has milk it is skimmed, as that is all we buy in. She doesn't actually like milk as a drink particularly (I hate it as a drink and always have done) so it isn't really an issue. She makes up her diay elsewhere.

as long as he is having a well balanced diet no reason why not,

HelloMama · 09/03/2007 18:45

DS does have a very varied diet, with lots of cheese, pulses, fish, meat, veggies and fruit, etc - there isn't anything he doesn't like or won't try, and for that we are very lucky. I'm going to see if the small cartons of full fat get consumed a bit faster, or we will switch fully to semi-skimmed as thats what we normally buy.

A top Paediatrician told me years ago that over 2's don't require full fat milk as long as they're eating a varied diet.
