similar idea for a vegetable rejector - stick onion, peppers etc in the food processor first, fry them up a bit, then add the passata and bubble, stick in the philadelphia and melt. ds is 3 and still has no idea that there are vegetables in this.

DD2's fave is so simple, I'm sure you must have already tried it but ...

1 onion, v. finely chopped
1 clove garlic, ditto
1 can plum tomatoes, organic when I'm feeling conscientious!

Soften onion and garlic in olive oil. Add tomatoes, let bubble away for 30 mins while toms break down. Terrible mum - sometimes add a tsp of sugar to sweeten the tomatoes. And dried mixed herbs if DH and I are having it too.

Have glass of wine during those 30 mins ... all that hard work!

poppyseed · 26/06/2004 11:55

like the wine idea!! Thanks for all your help - shall get busy immediately!!

bad news, the philadelphia/tomato based one was rejected tonight too!! Starting to think that he doesn't like pasta.....or maybe it's the tomato base? Any others at all?

carbonara? If he doesn't like the tomato, he might like the cheesey/creamy sauces. And if not, you can polish off the lot

poppyseed · 26/06/2004 17:26

Ooooooh! Car pasta, where from??!!!! DH may like that too!

OP posts:
poppyseed · 26/06/2004 17:27

PS - anyone got a recipe for carbonara or is it easier to buy one already done?

mine love the pasta shaped like shells (its normal pasta beginning with con I think) or the twirly whirly ones....

A very basic pasta sauce can be made with bacon, leeks and a pot of half-fat creme fraiche (just fry bacon and leeks and add creme fraiche at the end and stir till all warm). That's very quick.

Or you can make the proper white sauce with flour&butter&milk and then add the fried bacon to it.

I don't add egg to it because dd is allergic to it but you can add egg for carbonara.

carbonara - 100g pancetta or streaky bacon, 2 eggs, about 4 tdsp freshly grated parmesan, black pepper, about 100ml double cream, 1 clove garlic crushed. Fry bacon and garlic if using in a little olive oil until bacon is cooked. Mix eggs, cream, pepper and maybe a little fresh nutmeg together. Cook pasta and drain and when still boiling hot, return to pan and stir in the egg cream mixture and add the grated cheese. The heat of the pan and the pasta should cook the egg & cream. Make sure the heat is off theough or you will have pasta & scrambled eggs. Or you could always eat out - less work and no washing up!

I use this as the tomato sauce for pizzas:
1 clove garlic
assorted herbs
1 carrot, chopped
1 courgette, peeled to remove tell tale green bits and chopped
1 can of sweecorn
1 tin of chopped tomatoes
bay leaf

Fry carrot & garlic in oil, add everything else and simmer until you remember it. Puree in a blender and freeze in ice cube trays!

DSs never used to eat any vegetables but they'll happily eat this on pizzas. It's based on a pasta sauce. You can stir in some crem fraich to make it cremaier

For a long time, before accepting tomato based sauces or pesto, my girls just had a bit of melted butter, some grated cheese and a tiny bit of pepper on their pasta, with finger veggies on the side.

poppyseed · 27/06/2004 10:53

Need to update my cuisine!! You lot are so good!! Thanks for all the tips - will look for all sorts next time shopping - may struggle to find the willie shaped pasta though in ASDA!!!!!

DD's (2y 2m) favourite way of eating pasta is also the simple way.

Soft pasta tossed in butter and srpinkled with some parmesan cheese (or whatever we have in the house). Sometimes she likes me to sprinkle some herbs on too.

Nice and simply, not too messy. She even has it this way when we go to the Italian place downstairs. Having tried it, it is really yummy

popsycal · 27/06/2004 11:05

One which Freddicat told me about....

cook pasta and brocolli
open tin of tuna or salmon
put all stuff in a bowl
add afew dollops of creme fraiche and one dollop of philidelphia

if you use egg pasta the whole thing only takes abot 5 mins from start to finish

mummytojames · 27/06/2004 11:11

It comes in a jar, and it costs about 30p and has mushrooms etc in. Yes I do my shopping on line with Tesco, and you just poor it over the top, or mix it with mince or 'tart it up however you like. Then, most impotant, you hide the jar 'Tesco's Value Pasta Sauce' at the very bottom of the bin and everyone will think you have been slaving over the hot stove for at least 45 minutes!!
The good thing in my opinion about this sauce is that it is not too spicy, ie, garlic, or herbs mainly tomatoes and mushroom (you can also get one with mince in but thats a bit more expensive) I keep these jars in the cupboard as you can mix them with all sorts of foods and they are ideal for toddlers developing tastes!

Big favourite in our house is: whiz up one onion, two cloves of garlic, two carrots and three sticks of celery in a food processor until they are chopped but not pulped, then fry this mixture in olive oil for a few mins. Add one carton of passata, some oregano and black pepper, simmer while pasta is cooking, then a few minutes before the end add half a small goat's cheese (the soft, non-rinded variety like Chavroux). Baby, schoolboy and adults all enjoy this.
