I have always tried to make the majority of my 9 month old's foods, but recently he seems to turn his nose up at it, every time I give him a jar he wolfs it down, any tips would be greatly appreciated. I try to copy the recipies but with no luck it's so fustrating to make all this food for him not to eat it

HYave you tried putting your stuff into an empty babyfood jar, and feeding him directly from the jar?

Nip · 01/03/2007 15:53

have you tried Annabel Karmels recipes - they are really good and very easy to do... also what about really puree-ing all your homecooked food so he starts eating it - the slowly build it back up each day...

HTH

madmarchhare · 01/03/2007 15:54

Mix it together and then reduce the amount of jar gradually until its all your stuff.

gnu · 01/03/2007 15:55

Is this because the jar food is smoother. We find that DD finds it easier like this, but she's going to have to get used to the lumps of homemade!

Feeding out of a jar might help too. DD will put anything in her mouth if it comes out of a rice cake bag. Doesn't stay in long obviously...

janiejones · 01/03/2007 15:55

i've tried Annabel Karmels food, still no luck, I am tring to mash his food at the mo as he is a bit older, do you think I should make it all into a puree

How old is he? Does he like finger food. It was all my ds would eat.

gnu · 01/03/2007 15:57

Maybe puree some of it so he gets used to the taste while still serving some mashed/lumpy? You could also try giving him the mashed version from a jar to really confuse him!

janiejones · 01/03/2007 15:57

he loves breadsticks, and sucks on bits of banana etc

When my DS was ill (he's 10mo's) he refused everything - i ended up blending everything until it was totally pureed - he then eat it.
Each day i did it less and in a week he was back to normal (and no waste of food).

Perhaps try putting your food in a jar - i've heard this can work

janiejones · 01/03/2007 16:01

thanks everyone, I always feed him from the same bowl to try and fool him I always end up dipping his food in a bit of yogurt to get him to eat some!, will try all the tips

Why not try a broader range of finger food? The BLW threads probably have lots of ideas. I'm not a BLWer, but as I said, ds wouldn't take anything from a spoon at all and did really well on finger food. With dd I just fell into it naturally, and she preferred it to purees.

How old is he?

janiejones · 01/03/2007 16:04

he's 9 months old now so maybe I should try more finger food, he seems to prefer playing with it more than eating it but I guess thats normal

annabel karmel does some jars so maybe mix jars with homemade gradually adding more and more homemade.jars are sweeter so babies like it more!

beckybrastraps · 01/03/2007 16:06

Finger food is certainly more fun!

By 9 months mine didn't have purees at all. It made life much easier (I am very lazy!)

janiejones · 01/03/2007 16:08

did they eat enough with just finger food?

OP posts:
VeniVidiVickiQV · 01/03/2007 16:08

TBH, I wouldnt worry too much. Offer him a variety - if he doesnt eat it, he doesnt eat it. Jar foods (such as HIPP that have no additives) are fine. The first year its milk that is the important thing, so as long as he is having his milk okay - then dont stress about his meals.

Give him finger foods, not just at the table (with DS I actually had to leave food on the floor here adn there because he refused anything given to him at the dinner table).

Just give him a mixture of stuff, jars, your food, bits of food from your plate and take it easy. It could be that he is struggling a bit because he has teeth coming through adn his mouth is sore.

beckybrastraps · 01/03/2007 16:10

As vvvQV says, as long as they are getting the milk they're fine. Mine are both huge and managed just fine.

Really, just go with whatever works IMO.

ironingqueen · 01/03/2007 16:12

My dd loved jars and spurned anything I made with love. I did try the "own food in jar" trick, but it didn't work for me. However, she was very independent and loved to feed herself (with hands/spoon). It was a very messy business, but she soon was eating the same as ds, at a much earlier stage than he had.

janiejones · 01/03/2007 16:12

thanks vicky thank does make sense, he only has Hipp food as I try to keep as organic as poss, maybe I just chill a bit and just give him bits of everything!

his milk his fine, I stoped breastfeedng a couple of weeks ago and he is now on formula which he now loves

saralou100 · 01/03/2007 16:18

my ds1 exactly the same!

noothing helped (voice of doom) i just had to stop caring in the end.

so what if it wasn't home made, he ate... and just as vvv said it's milk that matters and giving finger foods are a good idea! if he didn't eat then he couldn't have been hungry..

ds1 is now 2 and he eats anything and everything and then some more!

don't do what i did and get so stressed that you end up sitting on the computer in floods of tears cause you r son won't eat your food!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 01/03/2007 16:25

It does sound daft, in retrospect! But I too, was incredibly stressed with DS' eating (or non-eating) habits. The only thing that worries me now is the volume of paper, soap, tissue, stones, snails and mud he eats.....

ironingqueen · 01/03/2007 16:28

All those wasted minutes sobbing to dh on the phone, "She doesn't like anything I make. Boo hoo!" Don't feel rejected, just liberated!

janiejones · 01/03/2007 16:34

thanks for all your help, feel much better now, well off for teatime now wish me luck! (grin)

The reason for your son not eating your food is because it has real flavour opposed to the bland jar food. Have you ever tasted the difference? If you do use jar food it is best to alternate/mix with home made so your baby doesn't get used to the jar food. Trying sweet veg on their own would be a good start.
