Wotsits/Quavers at nursery for under ones?

Dd's new nursery have crisps on the menu for one of their snacks once a week, I think the older kids usually get tortilla chips, and they give the babies wotsits or quavers.

OK, once a week isn't a very big deal, but I really can't see the logic in giving babies (she's 9 months) a high salt snack when general advice is to aim for a low salt diet. Is this a normal thing at nurseries? Should it be so?

BTW we've chosen to take alternative snacks in for her on that day - she hasn't had crisps yet and I don't see why she needs to start just yet. Genuinely interested in other people's views, whatever they are, on this.

Well, I suppose IKWYM Coddy, I don't think all crisps are the devil's work either, but I do think a powerful food lobby would like as many of us as possible to feed our children quite a lot of crap (low nutritional value often = high profit), but ho hum, I'm on my soapbox again about food and advertising to children, so I'll rapidly step off it.

muddaofsuburbia · 22/06/2004 13:11

For all the soapboxers out there (me included) - The Food Commission has an interesting article on salt in toddlers' diets.

Toothache · 22/06/2004 13:11

Well I was never taken to an Indian Restaurant as I was growing up.... But I have a take-away once a week now as a strict rule!
When I take ds to MacD's he has a burger with fresh fruit and milk to drink. It's ME that has all the crap. Don't really see the problem..... still!

Bagpuss30 · 22/06/2004 13:11

www, they deny that this is why they have withdrawn the supersize option though!

WideWebWitch · 22/06/2004 13:11

what made her vom?

codswallop · 22/06/2004 13:11

the film!
lol at you saying vom!

Toothache · 22/06/2004 13:12

DS gets a packet of salt'n'shake without the saly added, of course, in his packed lunch the 2 days he goes to Nursery! Is there something wrong with that? I'd say there is significantly less salt in those!

codswallop · 22/06/2004 13:12

IO think mcds is crap but am not puritannical

all i n moderation

CountessDracula · 22/06/2004 13:12

I'm not saying that you have to tell kids to do stuff, you surely lead by example. I have never smoked in front of dd for eg. In fact I probably smoke 20 fags a year having given up full time puffing about 6 or 7 years ago.

I STILL think it;s wrong of nurseries to promote McDs

WideWebWitch · 22/06/2004 13:15

why is it funny me saying 'vom' codster? I would irl you know! Or maybe I'd say puke, hmm...agree about moderation etc. Toothache, you do what you like, I don't think anyone's saying you can't!

codswallop · 22/06/2004 13:16
