Cooking rice

Am truly appalling at cooking rice but the wee ones love it so I'm trying to perserve.
Nigella Lawson suggests an electric rice cooker but as I don't have enough room in my life for another bit of kitchen tat, I'm wondering if I could use my slow cooker as lots of the ones for sale on Amazon seems to combine the two functions.
Cheers! x

Do you have a steamer? I find that works much better than a rice cooker.

I must confess I do it the Delia way and it hasn't failed me yet.
And buy nice rice - easy quick cook American long-grain rice tastes revolting however you cook it, so get basmati.

Slow-cooker recipe here - not sure about the tablespoon of butter though

I cook basmati rice like pasta

chuck it into boiling water and gentle boil for 8/10 mins, then drain

always perfect! couldn't be easier

Lullabyloo · 22/02/2007 10:10

i boil basmati for 5 mins,take off heat cover & leave for 5 mins.Perfect!

Defo use Basmati, much nicer.
Chuck in big pan of boiling water till cooked.
Put it all in a collander when cooked and then wash it through with cold water, it gets rid of all the starch the stuff that makes it gooey.
Let it dry out for an hour or so or you'll get a puddle on the plate, just zap in micro to heat up.
You can wash the rice until the water runs clear prior to cooking as well to remove the starch, i just always do it afterwards.
