what was it made my son high?

DS (17 months) was on a total high for about an hour this afternoon.

He had a bag of Wotsits and a banana at 11 a.m. We didn't notice anything unusual then. He had his usual nap 12:30 - 2:00. Then for tea we had a barbecue (sausages, bean salad, bread, lamb, banana) and he discovered barbecue sauce, which he was eating with his fingers, rather than putting it on food! Even before he got down from the table at tea time he was going crazy, shaking his head, laughing etc. When he got down he was running around and throwing himself about manically. He was not just pushing his trolley around, he was lifting it and running with it!

The only foods he has never eaten before are the wotsits and the barbecue sauce. We aren't obsessive about healthy food, but most meals are made from scratch at home and nursery, so I guess he is not used to processed foods or lots of additives.

I hated it when he was like this - and it could have been dangerous. So what do you reckon - wotsits with a five hour time delay, or the teaspoonful of barbecue sauce?

I'm guessing the wotsits - try looking at a packet to check the ingrediants.

They're bound to have E numbers, however I can't remember which ones are the nasties.

It seems too soon for the BBQ sauce to take effect.

BBQ sauce, I bet, lots of sugar.

lou33 · 19/06/2004 19:32

Maybe a combination of the two together?

WideWebWitch · 19/06/2004 19:34

Just looking up ingredients for you but looks like Wotsits may have Tartrazine in them. An article here

fisil · 19/06/2004 19:34

But Momp, wouldn't it be like alcohol? You wouldn't get drunk four hours after drinking? I don't know, I have no knowledge of how the body works. My logic says, like you, it must be the wotsits because of the disgusting ingredients, but I just can't make sense of having to wait 5 hours and then the high only lasting one hour!

DP agrees with www about the sugar, but the boy eats bananas for England, surely there's enough sugar in them?

I wondered that, lou

Aah! May have been MSG, which could have been in both? another aticle here

WideWebWitch · 19/06/2004 19:40

The sugar in most fruit is absorbed differently, so a banana, say, would give a reasonably slow release of sugar into the bloodstream but pure white sugar or a sweet would give you an instant sugar hit.

WideWebWitch · 19/06/2004 19:42

I've got Heinz bbq sauce in the cupboard, just checked and the second ingredient is sugar, so fairly high in sugar. But it also says 'flavourings' which could be anything, they don't have to tell you what the use, could easily be msg. Or anything really! You could try Wotsits again and watch for a reaction!

WideWebWitch · 19/06/2004 19:44

But my money's on the sauce! Do let me know if you find out, I'm intrigued now

fisil · 19/06/2004 19:48

www, I've just been and fetched the sauce. It is also Heinz, so I guess the same as yours. I think I might bin it - we buy a new one every summer and only ever use half, so it will not make a big hole in our lives (I've never even tried it).

I really don't want to panic or overreact, so I will try to carry on before - which means generally making my own food but not being too fussy. But I will keep an eye on his behaviour!

I was really just shocked by the effect that food can have (she says, just about to go and pour herself a stiff G&T!)

fisil, (she says, drinking a glass of red wine! ikwym!) you should see my son if he has Coca Cola (I don't allow it very often, really!) - he is completely wild it's quite shocking, well it was the first time he ever had it anyway. Now I'll only let him have it rarely and if there are at LEAST 5 hours before bedtime. Hmm, my sauce is prob last years too, must chuck it.

emmatmg · 19/06/2004 20:01

my sis makes her own BBQ sauce of you're desparate for it and don't want it in a bottle.

I could aske her for the recipe if anyone wants it.

fisil · 19/06/2004 20:04

yes please, emmatmg
