what about tuna/pasta/cheese sauce/veges (like peas and carrots) all covered with cheese and breadcrumbs and baked?

Really funny but I was trying to find the exact thing myself this morning! My daughters allergic to tomato. Dont know if this is any good but found it in a recipe book this morn. Macaroni and tuna layer? Could replace with pasta

100g wholewheat macaroni
25g low fat spread
25g wholemeal flour
300ml skimmed milk
salt and pepper
85g can of tuna drained
25g cheese grated
chopped parsley to garnish optional

Cook macaroni. Meanwhile melt the low fat spread in pan and add flour. Cook for one min then gradually stir in milk. Bring to boil and cook gently for a further 3 min. Season. Add macaroni and mix. Pour half into an ovenproof dish and sprinkle on tuna. cover with remaining macaroni and sprinkle with cheese. Bake at 200 degrees for 10 min and then add garnish.
Wouldnt have to worry about it being wholewheat macaroni or using wholemeal flour or low fat spread if you dont want to. Hope it works, will try it myself one day!

The tuna pasta bake recipe in the Dinner Lady cookbook doesn't have tomatoes in it. Let me know if you want the recipe.

Quite alot of schools and nurseries use this book as the quantities for recipes are given for family and school amount!

i made the tuna pasta bake with a mix from schwartz, it said put tomato puree in it but i left that out and it was lovely.

Wangle, could you also give me the dinner lady recipe as i would like to make my own tuna pasta.

Thanks

I used to make a tuna pasta bake that involved a tin of Campbells condensed mushroom soup which was lovely - can't think why I stopped making it.

Tuna Pasta bake from Dinner Lady cook book

Serves 4

225g (8oz) spring onion (I use ordinary onion)
olive oil
2 x 185g cans tuna in brine
225g (8oz) frozen peas
450g (1lb) dried pasta

Cheese sauce

115g (4oz) cheddar cheese
25g (1oz) butter or margarine
25g (1oz) plain flour
600ml (1 pint) milk
1 pinch cayenne pepper

Preheat oven to 160 C/325 F/gas mark 3.

Cut the green off the spring onion into 5mm (.25") lengths, and finely slice the remaining white onion. Stir-fry the onion for 1-2 mins in a little oil.

Drain the tuna well, and flake into a bowl. Grate the cheese for the sauce.

Cook the peas in boiling water until tender, about 5 mins. In a large saucepan of boiling water, cook the pasta until al dente.

To make the sauce, melt the butter or margarine, add the flour and cook until sandy in colour and texture. Add the milk, whisking all the time, and when it is smooth and has thickened add the cheese, keeping a little back for the topping. Stir in the cayenne.

Mix the pasta, peas, onion, tuna and cheese sauce in a deep dish, sprinkle with the remaining cheese and banke in the preheated oven until golden on top, about 25 mins.

Enjoy! This is really easy to make, we halve it and it serves 2 adults and 1 child....
