I've always boiled water in a pan, then removed it, popped the egg in and left it 10 mins - its always worked for me!!!

TheArmadillo · 10/02/2007 22:31

I thought it was till it floated to the surface - that's how I do mine and its usually fine.

pinkbubble · 10/02/2007 22:32

Sorry dont understand what your saying Do you take the water off the heat and then put the egg in the poacher bit and leave it for 10mins without it being on the cooker just with the hot water underneath!!!

Is that with a proper egg poacher or just boilng water and vinegar- I have an egg poacher!

I use just a pan of boiling water. When water's boiling I stick egg in and then take it out when it floats to top.

Have no idea how to do it with an egg poacher though.

CountTo10 · 10/02/2007 22:36

I don't use poachers as the egg always gets stuck - I literally get a deep frying pan or sauce pan, boil some water in it and then once boiled take it off the heat and then crack the egg into it, leave it for 10 mins and then take out with a draining spoon. Its a method i got from Delia Smith and its not failed me yet!! I don't use vinegar though.

pinkbubble · 10/02/2007 22:39

TBH whenever I tried to just use the water method (I did use vinegar) my eggs never seemed to go right. My MIL told me to lightly grease the poacher dishes and this stops it sticking, I just cant remember how long to cook them for and i cant ask her because shes on holiday in Australia until mid March!

A min and half, two at most

BandofMothers · 10/02/2007 23:09

That's just water and vinegar.

pinkbubble · 10/02/2007 23:10

That all- No wonder mine have been over cooked!

Oh!!!!!!!!!!!

BandofMothers · 10/02/2007 23:14

If you think about it, you boil an egg in the shell for about 2 1/2, so out the shell should be less. Mine are usually nice and yolky but not under cooked. Not being cocky am pretty shite cook, but seem to have a gift with eggs!!!

fishpie · 10/02/2007 23:19

Oh I cook eggs in a shell for 6 mins when water is boiling!

BandofMothers · 10/02/2007 23:24

6 mins. Are they still runny?

fishpie · 10/02/2007 23:26

Well sort of if I give them out straight away, funny enough they do set very quickly thou- arent you worried they are not cooked properly?

BandofMothers · 10/02/2007 23:35

No. There is never any runniness (is that a word?) esp in poached. If the boiled are a bit runny I put them in the egg cup and stand them in the hot water a bit longer

BandofMothers · 10/02/2007 23:36

I mean runniness, of the white, not yolk, obv want THAT runny!!!

pinkbubble · 10/02/2007 23:39

Well wish me luck for tomorrows breakfast, I only decided to do poached eggs as some of the DC wanted fried eggs and some wanted boiled eggs- thought this would solve the matter
