I wonder if anyone can give me some tips. We are going away to Menorca for a week this Friday and i am worrying about what i can feed him. I've got cereal for breakfast and raisins etc but that's it. Has anyone got any useful food tips (and any others) when travelling?

I don't know about Menorca but in Mallorca is very easy to get nice baby food (I actually managed to get gluten free cereal for baby which was an imposible find here) They sell all baby stuff at pharmacies. I think that you may feed him the same that you feed him here if you want, are you staying in a self catering accomodation? if you can cook take advantage of the fruits and vegetables available, it's incredible how different a simple tomato can taste when grown under full Sun.

Is this his first trip out of UK? there are lots of nice advice on the travel threads.

We went to Menorca when ours were 9,4,2,and 4 months. There were no problems at all finding things to eat for any age.

thanks for your advice, i don't really give him jars - i tend to cook it all for him but looks like i'll have the pans out whilst trying to enjoy the rays.

We went to Majorca last year but he was only on milk so it was kind of easy but this time is loads more planning - ahhh!

maxi, you don't have to be a slave to pans on holiday. maybe you could steel yourself to the odd jar, but as he is one, he should be well established on finger foods? you can try different types of breads, cheeses, deli items, olives, tomatoes, bananas, avocados, cucumber, carrot, smoked fish, ham, dried fruit (sultanas, dates, apricots), yoghurt, bread sticks, crackers...

When DS was 8mths we went to Turkey to a Robinson Club and I took enough Hipp jars for the whole time with me. But, if I had gone at 12mths I reckon he could have eaten from the buffet for some of his meals at least.

Sorry, but at 1 can't he just eat what you eat? Maybe this is because I am on No 3, but he was eating our meals by about 8mo as I just couldn't be bothered with any more mashed-up carrot etc. Serenequeen's finger food ideas are good; a 1yo can eat just about anything except shellfish (so no paella). Fruit and veg are fab in Spain as I recall, can't he just have what's on your plate in a restaurant? He might surprise you by his adventurous tastes in foreign food!

LIZS · 16/06/2004 13:13

I'd just mash up a little of whatever you or dp order. You could take a load of breadsticks (they'll probably serve them up anyway) and let him munch either with a small spoon, dip them or use his fingers. dd (who was not the most advanced eater at a year due to reflux problems) could manage flaked fish, chips, rice, soft veg, fruit, ice cream wafers etc. I'm sure you could buy baby yoghurts and so on if you needed to(ds was 15 months and well-weaned when we took him to Austria, went on hunger strike at the hotel food so we resorted to Hipp jars).

suzywong · 16/06/2004 13:24

We went to spain with our 13 month old and it was there he discovered the joys of chicken and chips, peaches, ham, cupcakes and a wide variety of fruit. Take him to the local market and let him pick something, Chandra makes a very good point about things tasting better on holiday

I think you will be spoint for choice, and he could always eat what the 1 yr old Menorcans eat.

DS was 10 months when we went to Italy and just ate everything we had. We ate out at lunch so he had octopus and squid (!), as well as pizza, salad, etc. and usually pasta at the house in the evening.

He was already a good eater although we did take Weetabix with us as that was his favourite and I wanted something familiar for him (and easy for us).

lucysmum · 16/06/2004 20:32

I usually take a bag of snacks such as bread sticks, raisins, other dried fruit, rice cakes, Organix fruity bar/crisp things (no additives, salt etc), treats (sweets, biscuits) plus some milk and sandwiches for the journey. This was a godsend when we recently got delayed 5 hours coming back from Portugal. When you get there he should be fine eating what you do and you'll be able to get all the normal basics in the shop.

willow2 · 16/06/2004 20:54

If all else fails, stick a calamari ring on his thumb and let him suck away on it! My mum used them as teething rings for me!

indamb · 16/06/2004 21:08

I took a cooler bag with me and filled it with yogurts and fridge stuff (oblviously need a good bag to stay cold for hours), it was a godsend as most of the shops only sold sour yogurts and I know dd wld not have bothered with them.

The first time I went abroad what I did was to take those Hipp organic cereals as they were easy to pack. Then I took her favourite museli bars and oganic crisps and things, some dried fruit and easy to pack things that didn't need to be refridgerated. That way I felt safe that if all else failed I'd have her favourite snacks with me. Then day 1 i went to the supermarket stocked up on bits and pieces, fruit etc for her and always found a resturant that did omlettes or something.

It'll be fine but personally I'd feel better if it was me at that age having a few of her fav things packed. Oh and I also took a jar of marmite with me as she adores it and I've only ever found marmite in the UK so....

LIZS · 17/06/2004 10:58

lol at the Marmite TC. We did that with ds on our 1st holidays abroad and you are right you cannot get it in mainland Europe, or at least you can in specialist import shops or some cosmopolitan supermarkets at a price!

Thomcat · 17/06/2004 11:04

I wrapped it in about 17 plastic bags and 5 beach towels!!! (slight exaggeration!) Was so worried that it would break and we'd all stink of the stuff!

Sari · 17/06/2004 11:09

If you're self-catering you can take a jar of pesto and a couple of tins of spaghetti hoops for emergencies. Maybe not what you'd feed him at home but it's only a week and you don't want to be slaving over the stove every day.

Blackduck · 17/06/2004 11:11

Just come back from a week in Turkey with ds (1 yr). I took some hipp jars with me - but really just in case we got delayed at the airport/travelling. Also took a plastic box of his fav breadsticks/biscuits. Out there he lived on yoghurt with fresh fruit, bananas, and then whatever else was available on the buffet - carrot sticks, cheese, bread, potato, pizza, omlette, etc.
Fresh yoghurt with honey is now an established favourite....
