What would you take to a gluten-free brunch?

Just that really. There's a big family (adult) birthday brunch this weekend which I need to bring a plate to. The majority of people are gluten free (including birthday girl) so need to try and think of something portable, brunchy and no gluten! Someone's already bringing buckwheat pancakes... all I can come up with in my head are sad looking non risen savoury muffins Confused I need a bit of inspiration!

Are they gluten free as coeliac or lifestyle choice? If lifestyle choice then something oaty, but if coeliac I would keep away from oats

ShowMeTheElf · 11/10/2016 11:53

frittata/Spanish tortilla.

NannyR · 11/10/2016 11:54

A bowl of fresh fruit salad or melon slices.

mumobsessedwithdamp · 11/10/2016 11:55

Good call on frittata. These scones look nice but I haven't made them yet.

CaptainWarbeck · 11/10/2016 11:57

Lifestyle choice... sensitivity issues. Differing from what seems like real issues to 'Oh I'll just take a homeopathic pill and then it'll be fine if I have some gluten'. Don't get me started, I'll just get flamed!

Fruit salad is an excellent idea! Can I jazz it up anyhow or just bung a load of tasty fruit in a pretty bowl?

Hash browns or home made bubble and squeak cakes.
Kedgeree.
Bucks fizz.
Fresh berries and lovely yogurt.
Bacon cakes (those ones you make by lining a bun tin with bacon, cracking an egg in, folding the bacon over the top and then baking until the egg is cooked.

CaptainWarbeck · 11/10/2016 11:59

Ooh now some sort of baked eggy savoury muffin type thing could be just the ticket! The link looks good mumobsessed

Or DH makes a good frittata, I could just say fuck it and leave it to him Grin

Big bowl of fresh berries and lovely Greek yogurt is what I would take.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 11/10/2016 12:02

I always think fresh fruit on a platter looks more 'special' than a fruit salad. But equally I think the 'fuck it frittata' is a very fine idea indeed!

OliviaBensonOnAGoodDay · 11/10/2016 12:09

Devilled eggs might be nice. Or baked eggs, with spinach, tomato etc.

DM and I both recently diagnosed as coeliac. It's people like the ones described above that make it harder for us in restaurants etc, because they tell staff that cross contamination isn't a problem, they can have oats but not wheat, etc. It's been a real eye opener. We've even been told to avoid mushrooms as they're grown on hay.

Not your fault though OP!

HeadDreamer · 11/10/2016 12:15

Anything rice based.

Allalonenow · 11/10/2016 12:19

Some cheese with grapes and celery.
Platter of ham and salami.
Hummous with cucumber/carrot/peppers to dip.
or
Oranges in wine with pomegranate seeds.
Almond or polenta cake.

CaptainWarbeck · 11/10/2016 12:20

I love baked eggs olivia but I've never managed to cook them myself so the white is set but the yolk is runny. My yolks always look nuked and are rock solid! Plus whatever I take has to be transportable for 40mins in the car...

Totally no problems with coeliac at all, and not even with fodmap sensitivities. It's really just the homeopathic pill that does my head in! I do a good line in gluten free carrot cake but that didn't seem very brunchy.

I'll dig around for a presentable looking platter for fruit. If not, the 'fuck it frittata' will be DH's task I think!

On the flip side its people like this thanks Gwyneth Paltrow-- who've caused the big rise in gf products in the supermarkets Smile

Speaking of which there are some delicious brioche rolls in Morissons

melonribena · 11/10/2016 12:21

How about a pavlova?
Rice or pasta salad made with gluten free pasta?
Filled potatoe skins and a dip

CaptainWarbeck · 11/10/2016 12:21

Oranges in wine all?!?! I'm intrigued!

Use your carrot cake recipe in muffin tins with extra fruit mixed in and no icing- voila; breakfast muffins!

OliviaBensonOnAGoodDay · 11/10/2016 12:34

Very true, troubled! I should look on the bright side.

Allalonenow · 11/10/2016 12:37

The eastiest pudding ever!
Peel oranges with a sharp knife, getting rid of as much white pith as possible. Slice evenly into rounds. Put in a bowl, pour over any sweet pudding wine and leave to chill for a couple of hours, you could add orange liqueur or brandy too if liked. Just before serving scatter in some pomegranate seeds.
Serve with little almond biscuits if you have them.
It looks pretty, and is so easy, a good winter supper standby.
