Finally a cereal I actually like and that isn't full of too much rubbish

dorset cereals
I'm sure there are others around but a lot of the ones in my health food shop I really don't like much and most of the normal ons in the supermarket really are full of sh*te
I know I can make my own (I could also weave my own lentils but tbh my name gives it away) but whenever I've tried I just don't like my own mixes much either. This stuff is really very nice. I've bought the variety box just to try them (found it in Tescos of all places) and so far I like fruit nuts and seeds, really nutty mueseli and super high fibre.
The only problem is the price! pretty expensive. Though 800g will give you about 10 breakfasts - so it is only about 25p for a bowl (plus the price of milk and fruit etc). I wouldn't order from them online directly though. They have a miimum order of £11.95 which is a lot to spend on cereal.
Now all I have to so is convince dh and ds to try them - both of whom are cereal phobics and want only chocolate croissants for breakfast (can't say I blame them really). On second thoughts since I like it maybe I should keep it all for myself

Dh and I like Dorset Cereals too. Funny how it tastes so much nicer now the packaging is more upmarket! The children don't have it, they have Malt Wheats (the non Nestle shreddies), Rice Snaps or Weetabix.

thread on this earlier

I think the muesli is disgusting (shame as I know the people who make it and the packaging designers)

full of horrible sickly fruit and the rest tastes like cardboard

make yer own

JackieNo · 06/02/2007 11:00

I like this too - didn't notice it before it was all repackaged. They've got a website, and it's all been Boden-ised, with 'quirky' slogans etc. I'm currently on the high-fibre one, which I had this morning with a dollop of Rachel's coconut yoghurt - yum.

Grape Nuts
I love 'em
and they are very good for you

dh and dd1 love grape nuts

I like the taste but not the texture

slice of wholemeal toast with peanut butter and mashed banana here

foxinsocks · 06/02/2007 11:03

I like the Jordans mueslis.

that Rachel's coconut yog is so rich, I can barely have more than spoon (dd wolfs it down!).

Lazycow · 06/02/2007 11:04

lol Enid tell it like is is I would
Do you have a recipe for your own because tbh any time I've tried that the cardboard factor is much much higher than in these ones

I do Jamie Olivers Pukkolla (pukey name)

Get a large air tight container and put in 8 handfuls of porridge oats, 4 handfuls of bran, 1 handful of any dried fruit (he recommended chopped apricots and dates but i don't like dried dates so swapped them for dried blueberries), also 1 handful of coarsely chopped nuts.

The night before you want to have it for breakfast put some in a cereal bowl (or enough for a few days) and cover it with milk then add half a grated apple per person or day and leave to soak overnight. In the morning it has gone all silky and lovely. Take some out, add more milk if needed, add chopped or mashed banana and some honey or maple syrup if you like.

Lazycow · 06/02/2007 11:10

Actually that sounds rather nice - Will try it but still have the Dorset ones for those times when I just can't be bothered.

Am happy that my breakfast is sorted for a while.

I find Rachel's yoghourts too sweet. When the children don't want cereal they have rice cakes and chocolate spread. Dd1 and I will have boiled egg and marmite w/m toast. Sometimes I make porridge - that's the most healthy I think. Have to have alternatives available for when I run out of milk or it unaccountably goes off before the sell-by.

hana · 06/02/2007 11:17

oh grapenuts!
haven't heard of them for ages and ages!
dad's fave cereal

Monkeytrousers · 06/02/2007 11:20

Grapenuts? Sounds like a euphemism for piles

Piffle · 06/02/2007 11:23

quite high in sugar I find - too sweet
I do make my own
And smother it in Rachels yoghurt...

fennel · 06/02/2007 11:31

I've been trying sugar free bran flakes - which are really tough to eat but you can mix them with some of the more sugary things, like Special K, for a compromise.

grape nuts are yummy.

CountessDracula · 06/02/2007 11:32

I usually have grape nuts or I make bircher muesli

(soak some oats in apple juice overnight, add yoghurt and blueberries and raspberries)

JoshandJamie · 06/02/2007 11:33

I always take the Dorset high fibre cereal and mix it with All Bran original, large flake oats and some wheat bran. I make it up in big batches and keep in airtight container. I have it almost daily - if I go a day without it, I notice!

And if you want yummy yogurt, go for the Yeo Valley fat free plain or vanilla yogurt - mix with berries and seeds.

These two things are my breakfast staples
