DS is 5.5mths and I have started to wean him, which basically means that I have been giving him a couple of teaspoons of various different fruit & veg at about 11am. My problem is that he is now not happy with 2tsps, will not finish his milk and is generally grumpy until he goes to down for his lunchtime nap, does this mean that he is now ready for a full meal at this time and how much do you give them. Have spoken to my cousin who said that she would give her DS a jar of savoury & a jar of sweet - is this right, her little boy is quite big!!
Also, having probs getting DS to take any water so should I get him used to this before giving more solids.
Please help, I haven't got a clue what I'm doing.
Thanks
Wellsie

hi wellsie...both my dd whos now 4 and my ds who 5 and a half months but been on solids on advice from hv since 4 months went onto solid meals very quickly.my ds was eating the equivalent of half a jar of baby food within 3 weeks of starting solids and is now on rusk in the morning lunch and pudd and dinner and pudd.with both mine ive stuck to guidlines of what they can and cant eat ie gluten etc but as for amount ive let them show me how much they want.
as for water ds didnt touch it uptill about 2 weeks ago now suddenly he loves the stuff,he has water with his lunch and dinner and makes up his milk throughout the rest of the day (and night).
i hope this helps.

Thanks Karenanne, Have tried DS with water in a beaker today - THAT WAS FUN! I think I'm going to have to spoon feed him some, wish me luck.
Would be good to know how many of you out there use jars rather than your own food. A lot of the food DH & I eat just wouldn't be suitable for DS.
Thanks
Wellsie

wellsie
have you seen the book by annabel karmel-Feeding your baby and toddler?? mine is coming up for 4 years old so i don't know if the title has changed but i am definetly no chef but this book helped me loads and you can incorporate meals for baby with cooking for adults so saves time as well
i cooked some carrots and carrot and potato for my ds(15weeks)and expressed breast milk and have put it in the freezer ready for when the time comes.....
good luck

don't kill yourself over the water. Starting weaning my ds about a month ago & he wouldn't touch water, but yesterday was very happy with it.

I'd also recommend the AK book. Don't be a slave to it, but it gives a useful guide & suggstions.

Don't worry either. Easy to say. i'm weaning my 3rd and occasionally feel the urge to be overwhelmed, but then I remember i have 2 others and they've survived. Use the book and your ds as a guide and it'll happen. Oh, and I wolnd't rely too much on jars, esp not at the begininning - they might only want a tiny bit 7 it wors out very expensive. if you're cooking veg for the family just make more & leabe ds's portion longer in the pan to cook longer. Oh and don't stress about what other kids are/were eating. 1stlt how on earth can your cousin remember what her ds ate, I can't, and every baby's different anyway.

good luck

Wellsie, my ds is same age as yours and he is eating the equivalent of a pot of savoury and a pot of sweet 3 times a day. I also wanted to start slowly but ds got far too excited about solids and still does - he gets very angry at the end of a meal if he hasn't stuffed himself silly. The only thing that puts him off is trying to give him bought food instead of homemade - another story, another thread! I know what you mean about water, DS was a bit constipated and I was desperate to get him to drink some - he wouldn't take it from a bottle or a beaker and I'm still spoon feeding him water after every meal. He enjoys this and tries to eat the spoon, but does swallow his water obediently. Doesn't like apple juice for some reason.

weslie i started with jars and now cook my own except when out mines nine monthsand very healthy considering the only thing i havent given him yet is honey and i agree with that being a no no
i never did the two tsp and working up i gave him full jars and let him take what he wanted
for ideas and to stop you being a slave to the itchen get a few ice cube trays i never did it at first but doing it now
do one with sweet potatoe
i give mine bolognase sauce (with baby rice until seven months then with choped up pasta)
tins of soup if hes teething spagetti will chopped up toast where the toast goes in hot spagetti it basically disolves
but with the jar of savoury then dessert i tried to aviod sweet untill he was haveing finger food for his tea so he could feed himself then i gave him cake like a sponge
hth and be warned when he starts on the finger food it gets messy
oh and another good one for ice cube tray is porridge just need to add somemore formula just before serving because it goes very thick
