Dinner menu with lots of exclusions

Friends coming for dinner on Saturday. One is veggie but eats anything else, one can't eat gluten, dairy, eggs, apple or onion. I dislike mushrooms. There will be 6 of us, I'm a reasonable cook and happy to do 2 different things if it's easier but I'm away until Friday night so can't need too much prep! Anyone got any ideas as I'm struggling.

stirfry? spag bol but with quorn or a meat one and a veg one (use special spag)

Artandco · 21/09/2016 13:58

Veggie casserole

Whatever you serve, have with rice or potatoes

OhNoNotMyBaby · 21/09/2016 14:00

Nut roast with loads of veggies

welshweasel · 21/09/2016 14:02

Can you make any of those without onions? I put lots of onion in pretty much everything...think that's why I'm struggling with this one!

I hate onions so never use it in spaghetti bol, just use loads after garlic. My mom can't taste the difference between mine and hers and she uses loads of onions.

Quorn has egg albumin in it, so not suitable for your allergy sufferer.

Onion allergy is an odd one and I would be concerned that it also includes leeks, garlic etc.

If you can check that it is just onions, make a vat of vegetable chilli (do not use a packet mix or jar as it will have wheat in). Serve with rice, corn chips, salad leaves, cheese on the side. Check your brands but good corn torillas are wheat free, so you can make enchilades or fajitas with grilled aubergine and courgette slices, guacamole and salsa (without onion).

Or a selection of different Indian meals and rices.

Yes it's definitely just onion. Hadn't realised you could potentially get wheat free tortillas, that would be a great idea.

The veggie is Indian, I'm not sure I could ever do a curry justice in her eyes!!

Mexican is a good idea. Can then do lots of dishes to suit everyone. Some meat, some veggie. And get some dairy free sour cream/ yogurt for those who need

There's a Venetian dish, green (puy) lentils braised with carrots and celery topped with pan fried cod (cheeks) and salsa verde. Traditionally you'd use onion with the carrots and celery but it would be fine to omit. Replace the cod with burrata or buffalo mozzarella for the veggie. You can bulk it up a bit if necessary with pan fried diced potatoes and possibly crusty bread for those without a gluten allergy.

I think my recipe is from the Polpo cookbook, will check later if I can find an online recipe if this takes your fancy.

Found it here, it's almost identical to the book recipe except it's been halved and says will feed 4 Confused, book recipe feeds 4-6.

I'd do a massive bowl of chilli (no onion needed), and probably a big bowl of chilli beans (with onion!).

Then - refried beans, home made guacamole (because shop bought has dairy for some reason), sour cream, big bowl of mixed salad, olives, jalapeños, grated cheese, and either baked potatoes or corn tacos.

And then a big bowl of Autumn fruits (no apples), with gluten free oats, sugar, and coconut oil mixed together on the top, served with ice cream and either coconut yoghurt or Swedish glacé (dairy free ice cream).

Sunnydawn · 21/09/2016 17:36

Was going to say chilli, with tacos etc and all the trimmings, and a veggie chilli for your veggie.

I have a family member who can't eat onions (or dairy, or gluten), but is fine with leeks.

Another possibility is a Thai curry. I can't eat gluten or dairy, but fine with a Thai, provided I use gluten free range stuff.

I can recommend this for pudding, its very easy & is lovely & chocolately even if I do say so myself. It can also be made in advance too...

Asofaetida is a good replacement for onions. Quarter of a teaspoon in at the beginning (I usually fry to release flavour) usually suffices.

Is the person avoiding the gluten egg etc on a low fodmap diet? If so there are loads of good recipes online. I am following it and was v concerned about lack of flavour but it's been fine. If garlic is a problem, you can use garlic infused oil (but with no bits) if low fodmapping.

Hope that helps.
