Every now and then I see why people rely on ready meals

I don't often buy ready meals. Very rarely in fact. But there are times like tonight when I just think, dammit, they would be a lot easier. I made roast butternut risotto - not a difficult thing to make, but you have to peel the butternut, deseed it, chop it up, roast it for a good 45 mins. Then start on the risotto, chopping up onion, garlic, then adding all the other bits and, stirring, stirring, stirring, grating cheese.

And then into bowls ....and gone in less than 5 minutes.

Or, I could have bought something, stuck it in the microwave and achieved a similar result with an extra hour plus to myself. Sigh

There is a place for ready meals. And cream and butter and ice cream. And chocolate and wine and champagne. And beer and white bread and.....

Just not every meal.

Says she who served Tesco's Indian Meal for Two to the babysitter and DD tonight before embarking on an evening of gourmet food for four cooked by someone else which turned into pub food for four because the resturant had screwed up the booking.

I love it when you talk the actual dialect expat

AitchTwoOh · 04/02/2007 00:33

she gets it all off the telly, harpsi, no-one really speaks like that...

expatinscotland · 04/02/2007 00:38

Aitch has not met DH .

hunkermunker · 04/02/2007 00:39

The Sainsbury's ones just have ingredients in them (no chemically stuff or preservatives) - and they're on offer atm.

expatinscotland · 04/02/2007 00:40

That's me having a curry just now.

LOL!

DH is home, he's watching 'Scare Tactics' and eating his chips.

I phoned and asked him to make a stop on the way 'hame'.

Hibs beat Greta this afternoon, so there's celebrating going on in Leith tonight and all the Balti's are open to capitalise on it.

AitchTwoOh · 04/02/2007 00:40

is he the wee fat guy off chewin' the fat, expat?

expatinscotland · 04/02/2007 00:41

That would be the Balti House across the road.

Mmmmm.

Such a curry!

expatinscotland · 04/02/2007 00:42

Nah, he's skinny as a rake despite eating for Scotland, the bastard!

And tall.

With blue eyes.

No wonder that pub's kicking off.

I pure forgot!

Those bams are shouting in the road just now.

expatinscotland · 04/02/2007 00:43

I wonder how many E's this has?

Who fucking cares?

AitchTwoOh · 04/02/2007 00:43

sorry, what?

expatinscotland · 04/02/2007 00:45

LOL!

He just said, 'Someone dunted my elby'.

I love this man!

AitchTwoOh · 04/02/2007 00:46

answers on a postcard, anyone not from scotland...

expatinscotland · 04/02/2007 00:49

He's a slice of life, Aitch.

My font of knowledge of all things Scottish.

Whenever I am confronted with seemingly unintelligble language, he is the ever-willing translator .

AitchTwoOh · 04/02/2007 00:55

i think he makes stuff up and laughs about it later. you poor gullible foreigner...

expatinscotland · 04/02/2007 00:55

I double check w/the door man in my work.

The bloke was a dockman in Leith for years, so he lets me know if it's a wind up.

paulaplumpbottom · 04/02/2007 12:54

You are doing the best you can for your family. That should please you. Some dishes freeze easily and when this is the case it usually just as easy to make twice as much. On nights you are tired you have a meal in your freezer that you made. Ready meals are full of junk. Don't do it.

hunkermunker · 04/02/2007 13:50

Um, they're not all full of junk. I don't eat the ones that are.

crunchie · 04/02/2007 14:00

PPB in theory I totally agree with you, and the hours spent slaving over a hot stove produing vats of lasange 'to freeze' bears this out. However will my children eat the lasange I make?? Never in a million years, and yes I have tried every varoiation on a theme, as have my husband, childminder and granny. But do you know, they will wolf down M&S beef lagane like it is the best thing ever!!

So do I buy the odd ready meal, you bet I do

paulaplumpbottom · 04/02/2007 14:37

How ungrateful Crunchie! Thats awful. In my house, just as it was at my mom's when I was growing up. If you didn't eat it you straved. You start eating whats in front of you quicker than you think.

AitchTwoOh · 04/02/2007 15:35

you should look out for a programme called Freaky Eaters, coming up on bbc3. adults who now only eat salt and vinegar crisps as a result of not responding appropriately to the 'if you don't eat you'll starve' message.

SnafuOutOfHiding · 04/02/2007 15:58

Aksherwerly, they're not all full of junk. Sainsbury's do a range of curries that are made from Proper Ingredients and I have been known to sling one into the trolley now and again for a Saturday night alone in front of the telly {hairy, smelly saddo emoticon}

I'd rather eat homemade roast butternut squash risotto anyday, though! Just as long as I don't have to do the washing up...
