I used to get Riverford when I lived in the UK and they were great.

AtterySquash · 02/02/2007 13:26

Have used A & C for years and they're VG. Always helpful/apologetic too if there's a problem with the box. I recommend.

swifterella · 02/02/2007 13:26

the thing i worry about is that i wont know what to do with some of the ingrediants. Maybe it will diversify my cooking?

Have had Abel & Cole for ages. Great service; v reliable; great quality.

It took a while to customise our box so that we always made the most of it - we get the Weaning Box (v basics) with added extras (you can add whatever you like through the website).

Didn't like abel and cole. Their veg often a little 'tired'. But I must be going back about 8 or 10 years, so perhapss they have improved as they have got bigger.

We use Riverford and I rate them highly. Very easy to manage online and change your order week to week. Good quality veg.

Have been using a&C for nearly 10 months and they have been great - you can ban veg that you don't like (ie. swede and beetroot for me) and they provide little recipe suggestions for you to try with unfamiliar veg. I have found it has challenged my cookery in a really good way making me try veg I had avoided since they were ruined for me by school dinner over cooking - cabbage for instance. I have a great fondness for chard now (it is gorgeous sauted with butter and garlic). It makes you much more seasonal in your approach to food and even when I buy supplementary veg from supermarkets I look at their origins more carefully to try and keep it local.

start with a small box and see how you get on - btw I am not on comission!!!

wheelybug · 02/02/2007 13:37

we get abel and cole too. It is generally very good although yesterday I did have to throw out a few pears as soon as they'd arrived. But that's quite rare.

We get the mixed box weekly. Its fairly standard stuff in the main. There are recipes on the site if you do get something you're not sure what to do with. I have got into the habit of getting my box on a thursday and then doing an internet shop that day taking on board what I can make with what I have received.

aDad · 02/02/2007 13:37

also depends where you live swifterella. I guess the best box scheme is the one most local to you.

swifterella · 02/02/2007 13:40

thanks everyone, we are up in warwickshire adad. d you think abel and cole is quite londoncentric? think i will try a veg scheme though as am trying to go completely organic and not use supermarkets as much.(polishes my tarnished halo!)

aDad · 02/02/2007 13:41

this might help

You can enter your postcode and it tells you what schemes are nearest to you

bristols · 02/02/2007 13:41

I'm another A & C fan. You can register your likes and dislikes so there shouldn't be any waste. It does make you try new things which is great. We used to get the mixed box but were having trouble eating all the fruit so now we have a veg only and order the fruit separately. You can even change your order on a weekly basis too. My delivery is on Wednesday and I have to register my changes by Monday so you don't have to plan that far ahead.

Blackduck · 02/02/2007 13:45

oh Ta aDad I was thinking of using Abel and Cole, but there places loacl for me...

swifterella · 02/02/2007 13:46

KathyMCMLXXII · 02/02/2007 13:47

Just tried my postcode to see if there were any others I didn't know about near me, and it came up with one other but neither of the two I have used.
So it's not comprehensive....

swifterella · 02/02/2007 13:48

but they only deliver on a tuesday and i work on tuesdays. back to abel and cole me thinks

OP posts:
KathyMCMLXXII · 02/02/2007 13:53

Do you need to be in for delivery? Most will leave it in a convenient place if you're out.

aDad · 02/02/2007 13:54

Great. Hope they work out!

Remember your halo will be shinier for supporting your local grower.

aDad · 02/02/2007 13:55

x posts there

I'm sure they should be able to leave it

yeah well thankfully the curly kale season doesn't go on forever. It can seem like it though.
