Corn beef hash?

Moonrocks6 · 25/08/2016 16:36

Just spoken to DH on the phone and he has requested corn beef hash for tea.
I have no idea where this odd request has come from and it is not something that I have ever made.

Does anyone have a good recipe that they could share.

The Delia one is lovely, I add sliced carrot to it as well. It's one of our "can't wait till we get home" foods after holidays and is the only meal that DD (11) eats the same size helping as DH!

PurpleDaisies I'm from Cheshire/North Wales. If I can be bothered I'll use diced and fried potato, but most of the time when I fancy CBH it's because I want something lazy and comforting, so it's more like meaty cheesy mash!

PurpleDaisies · 25/08/2016 17:56

I'm South Wales so maybe it's a Welsh variation. Dragon

Boil tatties, mash em, add corner beef from tin or packet, mash together with said tatties. I add fried onion to mine which according to my auntie makes me posh! Eat with beetroot. Could not be easier!

Yey! Feeling quite proud!

That looks great! It's now on our meal rota for next week...

We sometimes do stuffed potatoes with basically the same thing-cook jackets and hit in half. Scoop out flesh and mix with corned beef, carrots, onions and Worcestershire sauce. Put back in the potato halves, cheese on top and grill.

I've not had corned beef hash in years Sad absolute favourite childhood meal

Moonrocks6 · 25/08/2016 20:55

I have to say it was rather good. DH says even better than his gran's! Shock

Does it freeze? We still have half left.

It freezes really well. It also works very well as a pasty filling (my nan used to send me off to uni with at least ten pasties to go in the freezer) and fashioned into patties, breadcrumbed and baked like a fish cake.

This is the best one I have ever made.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 25/08/2016 21:06

Oh how I'd love to be able to phone home at 4.30pm and put in requests for dinner and have them made for me.

J0kersSmile · 25/08/2016 21:08

I do my corned beef hash like you purple apart from I use tomatoes and onions not carrots.

I eat it with a fried egg or gravy.

Moonrocks6 · 25/08/2016 21:20

Thank you purple.

Bibbity, it doesn't usually happen but I'm on mat leave and he's had a really crappy few days. He tends not to eat when he's unhappy so I wanted to make sure he had something that he really fancied.

Mmm corned beef hash.
I haven't eaten that since I lived with my parents. I tried to make it once but was so horrified by the look of the corned beef when I opened the tin I threw it out Blush

Kbear · 25/08/2016 21:39

I have never in my life made, eaten, been offered or know anyone who eats corned beef hash - my life is an empty vessel clearly..... where have I been? Is it a yorkshire thing? I am a Londoner, do we eat it in London but I just never have?

Tomorrow's dinner sorted once I decide which way to make it....

Moonrocks6 · 25/08/2016 21:44

It could be a northern thing k, we are in Yorkshire.
This is the recipe that I ended up following m.knorr.co.uk/recipes/detail/19086/1/corned-beef-hash

Well. You do know someone who eats Corned beef hash Kbear and you've known her for 30 years... Apologies that you've never been offered it when you come for dinner!

PurpleDaisies · 25/08/2016 21:49

Welsh here-we have corned beef hash too.

Kbear · 25/08/2016 21:53

lol Maureen - can't believe I haven't had it before. Tomorrow !

MaureenMLove · 25/08/2016 21:55

To be fair, it's not really a dinner party meal. We have far more class when we're entertaining. As you well know.

mogloveseggs · 25/08/2016 21:57

Never knew there were so many variations Shock
I chop spuds, carrots, onion. Bring to boil. Throw in an oxo cube or two. Then add corned beef or tinned steak if I'm feeling posh
Serve with lashings of brown sauce.

Kbear · 25/08/2016 21:57

yeah, I have video footage of the aftermath of your classy dinner parties ....

TheSilveryPussycat · 30/08/2016 18:55

Round here (Co Durham) corned beef hash is a stew like thing with corned beef, potatoes and carrots. Where (and when) I come from (50's and 60's Sarf London) corned beef hash is fried up boiled spuds, onion and corned beef. This is more like the dish called panhaggerty round here.

I found this thread by advanced searching for corned beef in recent posts. While shopping recently (for making corned beef hash, I had a sudden urge :) ) I noticed that there seems to be no Fray Bentos corned beef to be found. And the corned beef I've used instead (Princes tinned, M&S tinned, and Tesco's ready sliced) all seems to be the wrong texture, as if it's been mushed up a bit and then allowed to set.

Has anyone noticed this? I wondered if there was some new food regulation which might have led to it.

IreallyKNOWiamright · 02/10/2016 21:23

My nan used to make this!!!!

Wolfiefan · 02/10/2016 21:28

My DH loves corned beef hash but I can't bring myself to eat corned beef. (Once found what I swear was a chunk of windpipe. Bleurgh!)
Any other variations with beef or mince? Any other similar ideas? Especially if I can be a lazy slattern and chuck it in the oven or slow cooker!
